Men wished for what they desired; yet I only

wished to meet you where I choose.

And the watcher's eye is heedless, while my gaze

roams over your cheeks without caution.

And I lament what I endured in your absence—truly,

strange things that draw tears from a tearless eye.

And what lies in the folds of speech is flirtation:

    reproach, feigned resentment, and promises.

Talk that makes mountain goats slip, unassailable though they are,

and from it necklaces are strung upon throats.

And an embrace like the wind twining two boughs of an arak tree:

you sway against my sides wherever I sway.

And between the paths of the two glances lie love's

covenants, to which the hearts bear witness.

I hand you the tawny wine at times, and at others

you hand it to me, while misfortunes sleep.

So, O moon whose light has departed from me,

my nights and days are black in your absence.

And O watering place, whose path has been barred to me

by the enemies' spears—can I reach you to drink?

And O hail I have not tasted, yet it is—

from what I see—sweet to taste and cooling.

Is there not a sip from your cup's remainder, to bring healing

to one who has a fire between his ribs?

We lived in bliss awhile; then we were parted

by the hand of Time, revealing its guile and repeating it.

I soothe myself with hopes of reunion; if I live

until I see you, I am steadfast indeed.

And even if between me and reunion with you there lies

only the span of a day, it is far indeed.
