Our arsenic floats as dead, scattered dust,

Our verdigris surfaces as lifeless fragments

and sinks when melted, while combined with lead.

Yet melts and immerses when dissolved and refined

والسمّ والترياق في تركيبنا

والسمّ والترياق في تركيبنا

متجاذبان فمهلك ومخلّصُ

متجاذبان فمهلك ومخلّصُ

And the poison and antidote in our compound

In our composition, poison and remedy

pull against each other: one destroys, the other saves.

Wrestle, destroying and preserving in turn

وإذا تشخّص غيره بغرائب

وإذا تشخّص غيره بغرائب

فيه فذاك بذاته يتشخّصُ

فيه فذاك بذاته يتشخّصُ

And if something else is distinguished by peculiarities

When others reveal their strange eccentricities

within it, that one is distinguished by its own essence.

That in itself characterizes them uniquely

فعليك بالكتب القديمة إنها

فعليك بالكتب القديمة إنها

منها نهذّب سرنا ونلخّصُ

منها نهذّب سرنا ونلخّصُ

So hold fast to the ancient books, for indeed

So study the ancient books, for from them

from them we refine our secret and condense it.

We refine our inner selves and summarize
