May the downpour of clouds water her dwelling at al-Jizʿ,

covering the necks of al-Liwā and the mountain passes.

And may the rose's cheek within them never cease to be fresh,

and the mouth of their daisies remain bright with smiles.

Abodes through which the wind passes, so that

the wild, onrushing winds clothe themselves there in fragrance.

Musk has burst forth there, so that I am guided

toward them by the passing of gentle breezes.

When the late afternoons sicken there, they are visited

on the branching boughs by the lament of doves.

We halted, leaning over the saddles of our pale camels,

asking after it with streaming tears.

They remind us of an age whose bliss has passed,

and a life departed like a dreamer's tangled dreams.

Must I each day endure a recurring fit of longing,

that revisits me like the recurrent pain of speckled serpents' bites,

and a clinging heart whose gains belong to passion,

while I have nothing from it but the burden of costs?

When it wills, it races to the limit in youthful dalliance,

yet bridle bits cannot turn it back.

I say to riders enfolded in the wing

of a pitch-black night's gloom, dense with flight feathers,

whose riding-camels' saddles generously bear them onward as they find their way,

    drunk on the cup of care, their turbans tilted;

and their she-camels have donned the robe of darkness,

each bearing a youth whose eye of resolve is awake.

When he dons the pitch-black night, it opens,

its deep shadows revealing a bright-faced, smiling man.

And he emerges after the night's journey, as though he were

a remnant of a blade from fine old, keen swords:

Ho, you hurrying riders, turn aside

to one weighed down by longing, dust-covered and haggard,

parted from life's sweet basil, far removed

    from the cup and the loyal, congenial friend;

reluctantly divorcing a life of ease, and taking back

    a life of murky draughts and bitter fare;

he spends the night bereft of sleep, bedded on the earth,

for one asleep on the brocade of the two Iraqs.

When his eye plunges into a dawn doze,

    the sting of ancient scars drives away his sleep;

and tears that, whenever patience holds them back,

turn inward to burning grief, between entrails and chest.

And if you will not comfort me by staying, then help

with a brief detour between al-Liwā and al-Anāʿim.

And you two, tell my brothers: I find your pledge of love

like beautiful women's pledges, or the shade of clouds.

Is it right that I turn grave calamities away from you,

while you turn calamities' night-assaults toward me?

And that I exchange arrows with Time, defending you,

while you shoot at me with severing, wounding blades?

Through me, calamities' claw is clipped, sparing you,

yet your claws have sunk into what I hold sacred.

I make your enemies choke by loyally guarding you,

while you are a choking bone between uvulas and throats.

I protect you, guarding the heights, yet I see you

wanting me cast down to the abasement of camel hooves.

I hope for your affection as clouds are hoped for,

yet you insist on disappointing those who watch for rain.

I give your unruliness the coaxing given to a restive horse,

while you give me the rebuff of biting steeds.

And despite all that has come from you, I still yearn

    in loving you—by God!—with mother-camels' yearning.

I do not, whenever my hand betrays me in an affliction

that torments me, sever it from my wrists.

I shall grant you gentleness whenever you assail

my precinct with long, ruthless hands.

But for you, my rein would never have yielded to humiliation,

nor would my nabʿ wood have softened to gnawing fangs.

And whoever does not wish to live alone

meets his enemy as one making peace.

And whoever seeks to preserve a brother's affection

learns to be led, obedient to the binding straps.

And whoever rejects all but clear water from every drinking-place,

I see him suffer the torment of a thirsty man circling the water.

Can I expect faithfulness from you, when even before you

I learned that betrayal is an inescapable stroke?

And ask you for a disposition unlike humankind's ways,

as though I knew nothing of humankind's character?

And I seek among you one faithful to his pledge,

thus seeking a sun among dim stars.

And I hope for pure affection from you, in your midst,

thus hoping for honey's taste among bitter colocynths.

I shall overlook it, though a wound is in my entrails, and shield myself

by joining the cords of love before reproaches come.

And I shall let you trail the hem of my forgiveness,

perhaps you will gnash your teeth in remorse.
