    Love's fire smelts hearts, and through

    patience in enduring it, their worth differs.

    وطائرٌ في الخلاصِ منهزِمُ

    So one stands firm, smelted into purity;

    and another takes flight, defeated in its escape.

    لو سُئِلوا عن مَداهُ ما علِموا

    Each has a desire for his beloved;

    if asked its extent, they would not know.

    وما تراهُ فإنَّهُ صَنَمُ

    And love is that whose inner essence is hidden from you;

    and what you see is but an idol.

    Whoever complains of love has not done it justice; and whoever

    complains of passion is suspect in his love.

    Have you not seen the moths consumed by the

    fire, yet returning to it and crowding together?

    Far be it that a heart in whose depths dwells

    love for you should be touched by pain.
