ألاListen! أيهاO you الركبُthe riders اليمانونfrom Yemen ماwhat لكمْis with you
تَشيمونَyou watch for بالبطحاءin al-Baṭḥāʾ برقاًlightning يمانياfrom Yemen
Listen, O Yemeni riders: why do you
O you caravan of Yemen, why do you
watch in al-Baṭḥāʾ for lightning from Yemen?
Travel the desert with Yemeni lightning?
تُريدونyou seek إِخفاءَconcealment الغَرامِpassion بجَهدكمwith all your effort
وهلand can يكتُمُconceal الإنسانُa person ماwhat ليسis not خافياhidden
You seek to conceal your passion with all your effort,
You strive to conceal love through your efforts
but can a person conceal what is plain to see?
Can a man conceal what is not hidden?
أبَىrefuses اللّهُGod أنthat يخفَىbe hidden غرامٌa passion وراءهُbehind it
دموعٌtears وأنفاسٌand sighs صدعنَthey rent التراقياthe collarbones
God refuses to let a passion remain hidden when behind it
God refused that a love be concealed behind it
are tears and sighs that rend the collarbones.
Tears and sighs have split the shelters
وياand O رفقةًcompany of travelers مرَّتْpassed بجرعاءَthrough Jarʿāʾ مالكٍMālik
تؤمُّmake for الحِمىthe sanctuary أنضاؤُهاits weary mounts والمطَالياand the long-necked camels
And O company that passed through Jarʿāʾ Mālik,
And O company that passed by Malik's Ghurfa
whose weary mounts and long-necked camels make for the sanctuary,
Whose houses overlook its pastures
نشدتكُمُI adjure you باللّهِby God إلّاplease نشدتُمُyou would seek
بهby Him شُعبةًa fragment أضللتُهاI lost it منof فُؤادِياmy heart
I adjure you by God: seek, I pray,
I implore you by Allah if you have implored
in His name, a fragment of my heart that I have lost;
A part of me that I lost from my heart
وقلتمْand you would say لحيٍّto a tribe نازلينencamped بقربهِnear it
أقامواthey settled بهِin it واستبدلواand they exchanged بجوارياmy companionship
and say to a tribe encamped near it,
And you said to a living tribe nearby
who settled there and forsook my companionship:
They stayed and took the place of my neighbors
رويدكُمُgently now لاdo not تسبقواoutstrip بقطيعتيby breaking with me
صروفَthe reversals اللياليof the nights إنَّindeed فيin الدهرِtime كافياenough
Be gentle; do not, by breaking with me, outrun
Restrain yourselves, do not hasten my abandonment
the nights' reversals; time itself brings enough.
The nights have enough turns in fate
أفيis it in الحقِّjustice أنيthat I قدalready قضيتُhave paid ديونكمْdebts due to you
وأنّand that ديونيdebts due to me باقياتٌremain كماjust as هِيَاthey are
Is it just that I have paid what I owe you,
Is it true that I paid off your debts
while what you owe me remains just as it was?
While my debts remain as they are?
فواso, alas أسفاًsorrow! حتّامَhow long أرعىI cherish مضيِّعاًone who neglects
وآمنُand I trust خوَّاناًa habitual betrayer وأذكرُand I remember ناسياone who forgets
Alas, how long shall I cherish one who neglects me,
So woe to me, I will graze as a strayer
and trust a betrayer, and remember one who forgets?
And feel safe with traitors and remember the forgetful
وماand not زالceased أحبابيmy loved ones يُسيؤونthey mistreat عِشرتيmy companionship
ويجفوننيand they shun me حتىuntil عذرتI excused الأعادياthe enemies
And my loved ones kept mistreating me
And my loved ones still do me wrong
and shunning me until I excused my enemies.
And spurn me until I pardon enemies
وخيرُand the best صِحابيof my companions منone who كفانيَspares me نفسَهُhimself
وكانand was كفافاًneutral لاnot عليَّagainst me ولاnor لِيَاfor me
And the best of my companions is one who leaves me unharmed,
The best of my friends spared himself for me
and remains neutral, neither against me nor for me.
Sparing me, not needing me or mine
ألمhave you not ترَseen أنَّthat الحيَّthe tribe طالَgrew lengthy نجيُّهمtheir private counsel
لبينٍover parting ولبَّواand they answered للفراقِfor separation منادياa herald
Have you not seen how long the tribe's whispered counsel lasted
Did you not see that their chief has prolonged his farewell
over parting, and how they answered a herald of separation?
For a reason, responding to the call of separation
وقالواand they said اتَّعدْناwe agreed together للرحيلِto depart غُدَيَّةًat daybreak
فواحسرتاoh, my anguish! إنْif أصبحَis found at dawn الركبُthe caravan غادياdeparting
And they said, 'We have agreed to depart at daybreak.'
And they said, "Tomorrow we will depart at dawn"
Oh, my anguish, if dawn finds the caravan setting out!
Alas if the caravan departs in the morning
فياso, O قلبُheart عاودْreturn to ماwhat عهدْتَyou knew منof الجَوىburning anguish
معاذَI seek refuge in الهَوىlove أنْthat تُصبِحَyou become اليومَtoday سالياforgetful of love
So, O heart, return to the anguish you have known;
So O heart, return to what you knew of passion
Love forbid that you should find consolation today.
Far be it from passion to awaken today indifferent

And O my lifeblood, melt; O my eye, keep vigil!
And O my inner self, melt, and O my eyelid, keep vigil
And O soul, let longing leave nothing of you.
And O soul, leave none of the ecstasy left
وياand O صاحبيmy companion المذخورkept in reserve للسرِّfor secrets دونَهمْapart from them

I shall sincerely give you وُدِّيmy affection معلناًopenly ومناجياand in confidence
And O my companion, reserved for secrets apart from them,
And O my confidante, reserved for secrets between us
I shall give you my pure affection, openly and in confidence.
I will tell you my love, speaking intimately

Whenever you see the herd ushering along a little gazelle,
When you see the flock scare a delicate gazelle
slender-limbed, dark at the eye corners, gazing intently,
Who cries beautifully with tearful eyes

do not draw near that little gazelle, for it
Do not go near that gazelle, he
eludes you when shot at, and strikes you dead when it shoots.
Will escape you, striking and deafening you

And tell my drinking companions, who expected
And give my regrets to those who expected
to meet me after today, that there will be no meeting.
To meet me again after this day, that we will not meet

So do not hope for a cure for what afflicts me, for it
So do not hope for relief from my condition, for it
is the disease that has baffled the physician who treats it.
Is the sickness that has exhausted the healer
ولمand not أنسَI forgot يوماًa day بالحِمىin the sanctuary طابَwas pleasant ظلُّهits shade

And I have not forgotten a day in the sanctuary whose shade was pleasant,
And I have never known in love a day whose shade was pleasant
and there we tasted life's sweetness, pure and clear.
Where we attained from life's existence something pure

فهلthen do بكمُin you منof لوعةِthe burning anguish الحُبِّof love ماwhat بياis in me
I see a suspicious glance from you toward it;
I see in you a disturbing glance towards it
do you feel the same burning anguish of love that I do?
Is there in you any of the agony of love that is in me?
وليلةِand a night وصلٍof union قدindeed لبسناwe donned شبابَهاits youth
إِلىuntil أنthat أشابَturned gray الصبحُthe dawn منهاof it النواصياthe forelocks
And a night of union whose youth we donned,
On a night of union we wore its youth
until dawn turned its forelocks gray.
Until dawn streaked on us like white temples,
ذكرناwe recounted شكاوىcomplaints ماwhat لَقِيناwe suffered منfrom الهَوىlove
فلماthen when تصالحْنَاwe reconciled نسِيناwe forgot الشكاوياthe complaints
We recounted our complaints of what we suffered from love;
We recalled the complaints we met from passion
then, when we made peace, we forgot the complaints.
But when we reconciled, we forgot the complaints,
وبِتْنَاand we spent the night علىin رغمِdefiance of الحسودthe envious one تضُمُّنَاenfolding us

And we spent the night, in defiance of the envious one, enfolded
And we spent the night despite the envious, embracing,
together by the edges of her mantle and my cloak.
Enveloped together in its cloak and gown,

فماyet not بَرِحَتْit departed حتىuntil شكرناwe thanked الليالياthe nights
And the wrongs done by the nights had been many;
Though the crimes of the nights were many,
yet it lingered until we thanked the nights.
They did not cease until we thanked the nights,
