أحبو بخالص شكريَ الأعداءَ
If anyone singles out a friend for thanks, I, for my part,
The one I thank is my friend, but my true thanks
bestow my sincere thanks upon my enemies.

حتى امتطيت بنعليَ الجوزاءَ
They made rivalry in lofty pursuits my nature,
They spurred me to reach the heights of nobility,
Until, in my sandals, I mounted al-Jawza.
So I could mount Pegasus and take to the skies.

ونفيتُ عن أخلاقيَ الأقذاءَ
And they reproached me for my faults, so I guarded against them,
They chided my faults so I learned to beware,
And I banished the impurities from my character.
And purged myself of the foul and unwise.

And sometimes a young man benefits from his enemy,
A lad can gain much from the enmity of others,
And poison is sometimes a remedy.
At times even poison proves a cure in disguise.
