I would ransom her who visited me by night among her maidservants,

Among the women visiting the sick, to learn how I fared.

Then she found one worn thin by journeys, exhausted by love,

Clad in love, girded with sickness,

Tormented, with life's last remnant: if returned to

A dead man's body, even thousands of such remnants could not revive him.

And she turned toward one of them, saying,

While tears scattered pearls from her eyelids:

“We have indeed done wrong; if doom is decreed, then oh,

My grief for him! Yet if he survives, he has triumphed.”

Then she turned back and passed her fingertips' coolness

Over my liver's heat, enough to split stone.

And she let fall words as she departed,

Some sweet, and some that flung sparks.

And she left me with the promise of a second

Visit that would banish care and brooding.

If I survive, then who is like me? And if it be the

Other fate, I have gained what I wished from her brief visit.
