عَجباًHow strange! لقومٍat a people يحسُدونَthey envy فضائِليmy virtues
ماranging بينbetween عُتَّابٍreproachers إِلىto عُذَّالِcensurers
How strange are people who envy my virtues,
How strange are people who envy my virtues
ranging from reproachers to censurers.
From Uttaab to Uththaal.
عتَبُواthey reproached علىfor فضليmy excellence وذمُّواand they disparaged حِكمتيmy wisdom
واستوحشواand they recoiled منfrom نقصِهمtheir shortcomings وكماليand my perfection
They reproached me for my excellence and disparaged my wisdom,
They blamed me for my excellence and defamed my wisdom,
and recoiled from their shortcomings and my perfection.
And felt dejected by their flaws and my perfection.
إِنىindeed I وكيدَهُمُand their scheming وماand what نَبحُواthey barked بهِwith it
كالطَوْدِlike a mountain يحقرُscorns نطحةَthe butting الأوعالِof the ibex
I, in the face of their scheming and all they barked,
I and their plots and what they barked with
am like a mountain that scorns the butting of ibex.
Are like the mountain that belittles the butting of lambs.
وإِذاand when الفتَىthe young man عرفَknows الرشادَthe right path لنفسِهِfor himself
هانتْbecame insignificant عليهِto him ملامةُthe reproach الجُهَّالِof the ignorant
And when a young man knows the right path for himself,
And when a young man knows what's right for himself
the reproach of the ignorant means little to him.
The blame of fools becomes trivial to him.
