How many a night I have kept vigil with its radiant stars,

While the air was pale from the breaths of my longing.

I watch the sky, its star huddled motionless,

Bewildered, its paths already barred to it.

And as though the sky were a sea whose billows are gulped down,

And its star were a drowning man sinking within it.

And there you see the mother of the stars, like a stream

In a meadow where silver lies molten.

And her daughters are a herd of gazelles—some coming to water,

Or leaving it, or content without it, or seeking it by night.
