منهاfrom them فماso not أحتاجُI need أنْto أتعلَّمَاI learn
As for the sciences, I have attained my desire;
As for the sciences, I have indeed attained what I sought
From them, I have no need to learn anything more.
from them, so I have no need to learn.
وعرفتand I knew أسرارَthe secrets الخليقةِcreation كلَّهاall of them
عِلماًknowledge أنارَilluminated ليَfor me البهيمَthe pitch-black darkness المُظلماthe dark
I have come to know all the secrets of creation,
And I have come to know all the secrets of creation,
A knowledge that lit for me the pitch-black dark.
with knowledge that illuminated the pitch-black darkness for me.
وورثتُand I inherited هُرْمُسَHermes سِرَّthe secret حكمتِهhis wisdom الذيwhich
ماnot زالceased ظنّاًa conjecture فيin الغيوبthe unseen مرجَّماguessed at
And I inherited from Hermes the secret of his wisdom, which
And I inherited from Hermes the secret of his wisdom, which
Has long remained mere conjecture, guessed at among mysteries.
has remained a conjecture, guessed at in the unseen.
وملكتُand I possessed مفتاحَthe key الكُنوزِthe treasures بفطنةٍthrough insight
كشَفتْrevealed ليَto me السرَّthe secret الخفيَّthe hidden المُبْهَماthe obscure
Through discernment I gained the key to treasures,
And I gained the key to the treasures through insight
Which unveiled for me the hidden, baffling secret.
that revealed to me the hidden, obscure secret.
لولاwere it not for التَّقِيَّةُprudent concealment كنتُI would be أُظهِرُI reveal معجزاًa marvel
منfrom حكمتيmy wisdom يشفيcures القلوبَthe hearts منof العَمىblindness
Were it not for prudent concealment, I would reveal a miracle
Were it not for prudent concealment, I would reveal a marvel
Of my wisdom, one that heals hearts of blindness.
from my wisdom that cures hearts of blindness.
أهوىI desire التكرُّمَgenerosity والتظاهرَand openly displaying بالذيwhat
عُلِّمْتُهI was taught it والعقلُand reason يَنْهَىforbids عنهماagainst both of them
I yearn to act generously and openly display what
I long to be generous and to display what
I have been taught, while reason forbids me both.
I was taught, yet reason forbids both.
وأُريدُand I wish لاnot ألقىI encounter غبيَّاًa fool موسراًwealthy
فيin العالمينَthe worlds ولاnor لبيباًa discerning man مُعدِماdestitute
And I wish never to encounter a prosperous fool
And I wish never to meet a wealthy fool
Anywhere in the worlds, nor a wise man destitute.
in all the worlds, nor a discerning man in poverty.
والناسُand people إماeither جاهلٌignorant أوor ظالمٌunjust
فمتىso when أُطيقُI am able تكرُّماًacting generously وتكلُّماand speaking
Yet people are either ignorant or unjust—
And people are either ignorant or unjust—
How, then, can I manage generosity and speaking out?
so when can I be generous and speak?
