    And my life's blood for him—I do not wish for my soul

    Life's sweetness or its solace after he is gone.

    News of death arrived while I was hoping to see

    The face of the bearer of glad tidings approaching from him.

    حتى ابتُلِيتُ من الشَّقاءِ بفَقْدِهِ

    It was not enough that I lived on after parting from him;

    I was further afflicted, through misfortune, with his loss.

    So let the days reveal their utmost guile,

    And let fate exert itself to the utmost.

    Nothing remains for me whose nearness gladdens me,

    Since the day of your death, or whose distance grieves me.
