A guest journeyed by night, while night shook out its dye

Above the south wind, with its ample wing.

It was dashed against the mountains' humps as it swept on,

    Its fringes fluttering with flashes.

The wind drew the loose folds of his cloak around him,

And on him were bite-scars from the cold, rain-laden wind.

Swarms of anxieties beset him, while the darkness

Had not yet cast whiteness on its black tresses.

His eyelids beat against the downpours of slumber,

And night had closed its eyes utterly.

Bring his baggage to us, and stoke

The restless radiance, like a tongue-flicking serpent.

A light, as though the sun had poured out her molten essence,

Quenches the successive waves of her overflowing light.

Match time's cunning with your own, and resolve

With the resolves of a shrewd man who binds and unbinds.

The broad paths through affairs narrowed for him, then were opened

For him through the resolve of an adept, practiced tamer.

Your gums grew miserly for riches, and you did not deem

The choicest praise a recompense for one who takes it in return.

Astray is the man who slays the prime of his life

By curing a wasted wretch, one of the wasted.

His scheming burns with cravings, and splintered bones leave him

Slippery of foothold, with targets close at hand.

An invalid, when his strange ferocity flails

With resolves bowed of neck and sickly.

    يهفو بمنْبَتِّ القُوى مُنهاضِ

    Cramped are his ascents along the pathways of his scheming;

He falters, his strength spent, a broken man.

The nose-pegs of his humiliation have chafed his nose:

An old camel, moving on with the scabs of disgrace.
