O abode of glory, wherever you settle is its abode.

All of it is in you, though mankind has gained only a part.

[Wording unclear:] And since you were Ali—Tamim—and grew tall in...

Great, when it died, while little of it was among mankind.

Indeed, Tamim sought Ali, and there grew tall in

the heaven of glory, through pride in your branch, its root.

And the qualities of excellence were a maiden; so when

you were born, the All-Merciful decreed that you were her husband.

No noble man like you is seen in excellence,

Nor is their like seen in anyone unlike you.

Your excellence is renowned, even if it were not to them

bound, should their excellence not spread among people.

Whenever the faculties of our understanding thirst within us,

You give them another thirst-quenching draught from your wisdom.

And if one day questions of wisdom become knotted,

You unravel them without exerting thought.

You set right their unsound parts however you wish,

And turn to what is sound in them and render it unsound.

Alike, when you seek to clarify their learning,

Are their subtle meanings and their main substance to you.

I pledge that your rank shall rise

Through them, to heights whose least cannot be reached.

    فَأَنتَ فَتاها في الفَخارِ وَكَهلُها

    You have surpassed your peers in eminence;

So, in glory, you are both its young man and its seasoned one.

You surpassed them all through your character, whose

bounty committed the crime when its drought breathed its last.

Abu Qasim, if you find the portrait in my praise excellent,

Its themes come from you, and you are their dwelling.

So no merit is mine; rather, all its merit comes from you.

Yet the one worthy of it clothed me in the robe of glory.
