دَلَّ فَأَبدى الصُدودَ وَالجَزَعا

دَلَّ فَأَبدى الصُدودَ وَالجَزَعا

تيهاً وَقَد كانَ حَقَّق الطَمَعا

تيهاً وَقَد كانَ حَقَّق الطَمَعا

He acted coy, showing aversion and anguish,

He led on, displaying aloofness and grief,

Out of conceit, though he had already fulfilled my hopes.

Wandering though he had realized his hope.

وَلَم يَكُن ذاكَ مِنهُ عَن مَلَلٍ

وَلَم يَكُن ذاكَ مِنهُ عَن مَلَلٍ

بَل كانَ يَهوى أَذِيَّتي وَلَعا

بَل كانَ يَهوى أَذِيَّتي وَلَعا

And that was not from weariness on his part;

That was not out of boredom on his part,

Rather, he passionately delighted in hurting me.

But he loved to torment me and was obsessed.

حَتّى إِذا ما يَئِستُ مِن تَمَنُّعِهِ

حَتّى إِذا ما يَئِستُ مِن تَمَنُّعِهِ

قِدماً من الصابِ في الهَوى جُرَعا

قِدماً من الصابِ في الهَوى جُرَعا

Until, when I despaired at his coy resistance,

Until when I despaired of his aloofness,

Long ago, draughts of bitter sap in love.

I took a draft of enduring love right from the start.

ظَبيٌّ تَجرَّعتُ من تَمنُّعِهِ

ظَبيٌّ تَجرَّعتُ من تَمنُّعِهِ

قِدماً مِنَ الصابِ في الهَوى جُرَعا

قِدماً مِنَ الصابِ في الهَوى جُرَعا

A gazelle—from his coy resistance I swallowed

A gazelle, I took a draft of his aloofness,

Long ago, draughts of bitter sap in love.

Right from the start, a draft of enduring love.

يَتبَعُني في الهَوى وأَتبَعه

يَتبَعُني في الهَوى وأَتبَعه

أَكرِم بِهِ تابِعاً وَمُتَّبَعا

أَكرِم بِهِ تابِعاً وَمُتَّبَعا

He follows me in love, and I follow him.

He follows me in love, and I follow him,

How noble he is, both follower and followed!

Honoring him as a follower and one followed.
