The thirsty supplicants came to drink and went away

with thirst quenched; pleasant to them was the drinking-place beside you.

And I came to a pool overflowing its banks,

but drew back my bucket, its worn leather rattling.

And I see you rain on one quarter, but not another,

while my stretch of land lies barren for lack of your sky’s rain.

Is it because of my high standing that you delay granting my request,

or have I no hope of any bounty from you?
