وِرْدَlike the watering visits of الحَوائِمِthirsty circling creatures سُدَّwas barred عَنْهاagainst them المَوْرِدُthe watering place
Umamah said, while cares kept visiting me
like thirsty creatures circling a barred watering place:
أَنَبَاhas ... turned away بِحاجَتِكَfrom your request الأمِيرُthe emir، ومدَّهُand supported him
فيin ذاكَthat قومٌmen كاشحونَspiteful فأجهدُواand did their utmost
"Has the emir spurned your request, supported
in this by spiteful men who did their utmost?
فَاقْذِفْso cast بِنَفْسِكَyourself فيthrough البِلادِthe lands، فَإِنَّماfor only

Then cast yourself abroad through the lands, for only
the dull stay-at-home cuts short and curtails his ambition.
وأخُوand the man burdened with الهُمُومِcares، إِذاwhen الهُمُومُcares تَحَضَّرَتْcome to
جُنْحَat the fall of الظَّلامِdarkness، وِسَادَهُhis pillow لاdoes not يَرْقُدُsleep
And the man burdened with cares, when his cares come
to his pillow at nightfall, does not sleep."
فلبستُso I donned للحربِfor war العوانِrenewed ثيابَهاits garments،
وشَبَبْتُand I kindled نَارَthe fire of الحَرْبِwar فَهْيَso it تَوَقَّدُblazes
So I donned the garments for war renewed,
and kindled war's fire; now it blazes.
