كَخَطِّ الكَفِّ بِالآيِ العِجافِ
Have faded campsite traces at al-Malā stirred you,
The one who agitated you with love is a constant lover
like a hand's writing in thin, faint marks?
Like the line of the palm with the twisted scripture
تَعاوَرَهُنَّassailed them in turn بَعدَafter مُضِيِّthe passing of حَولٍa year

مَصايِفُ جُلُّها بَردُ وَسافي
After a year had passed, they were assailed in turn
After the passing of a year, the seasons succeeded each other
by summer storms, mostly hail and drifting sand.
Most of them being cool and winter-like
فَعَيناهُso his two eyes لِصَرمِbecause of severing حِبالِthe bonds of سَلمىSalmā

So his eyes, for the severing of Salmā's bonds,
His eyes yearn for the necklaces of Salma
and long separation from her after union,
And the length of her separation after union

غَريضَ الماءِ مِن خُرَزِ الأَشافي
were like two worn buckets of old waterskin leather, gushing
Like two mournful doves created as twins
fresh water through the awls' stitch-holes.
Whose eyes poured tears like rain from the rims
لَعَمرُكَby your life يَومَon the day of بَينِthe departure of الحَيِّthe clan إِنّيindeed I

By your life, on the day the clan departed, I
By your life, on the day I was between the living, I am
had patience to bear it, and resignation,
Truly patient with it and confessing

despite a deep sigh born of longing's gasps,
On the heights of the groans of yearning
whose shudder rose beneath the heart's sheath.
Its fragrances rose under the awning
فَمَهلاًso gently now بَعضَsome of وَجدِكَyour anguish كُلُّevery أَمرٍmatter

So ease some of your anguish; every trouble
So wait, for every matter, even if pressing
ends in relief, even if it looms near.
Will eventually reveal and unfold

Likewise, a dwelling draws near after distance,
Thus is the house, it welcomes after estrangement
and after scattered affairs and resignation.
And after the dispersion of matters and confession

بِعانَةَ مِن خَراطيمِ السُلافِ
And no tawny wine within the sides of a dark jar
The gray-haired one in the sides of his beauty
at ʿĀna, of the choicest first-pressed wine—
Is not lacking in vitality from the runnels of youth

nine years had passed for it in the wine-jar,
Nine years have passed for him, his sins being nine
and a full year after those nine had elapsed;
And a year after the nine going by

then, when its clay seal was crumbled off, it gave fragrance,
So when the clay mask was removed from it
and became clear, its draughts free of sediment and pure—
The purest of wines flowed freely, unveiled

With the sweetest flavor from Umm Salma
when night inclines, announcing its midpoint.
When night approaches, announcing the middle

I am the son of those who defend Najd's crest
I am the son of those who prevented the peerless camels of Nejd
as far as the Two Mountains, with light, gleaming swords,
From traveling to both mountains with light luggage

to Wādī al-Qurā, then the sands of Khabt,
To Wadi Qura, then to Buraydah and its ruined Khabt
then the waters of al-Danā, then Jufāf's winding dunes.
And waters that have vanished in drought

فَرَومانَ التِلادُ مَعَ الطِرافِ
A ransom for the horsemen of the two clans, Ghawth
A redemption for the horsemen of the two tribes Ghauth
and Rawmān—both inherited possessions and newly gained!
So the many horses bolted with the racers
هُمُthey تَرَكواleft القَبائِلَthe tribes مِنof مَعَدٍّMaʿadd

They left the tribes of Maʿadd,
They left the tribes of Ma’add
whenever they wished, with little disdain.
When they wished, few in number

And they led the noble steeds up to me in a troop,
And they led the steeds in troops against the enemies
against the enemies, like swooping kites.
Like arrows flying straight in the air

They vied with riding-camels through every mountain pass,
They compete with the riding camels on each stretch
like an ostrich chick's neck, its course far-reaching.
Like an ostrich spreading wide on the plain

with the riders, their eyes prominent;
Their eyes roaming ceaselessly

With braids undone without weakness
and rounded at their delicate joints.

Their hooves were cupped, and upright stood
The hooves gathered and the circles narrowed
the hair whorls, contracted after drying.
After regions diminished in drought

Armored warriors kept them beside them on every day
The guardians avoided them every day
of a sickly sun and reddened horizons.
Ailing from the orange sun of the horizon

When they pricked their ears in fright,
If they turned their ears to a alarm
the defenders told them, 'So do not fear.'
The protectors told them “fear not”

Take heed: convey to the pretender to Banū Ḥarām
Shall I convey, O Da’i of the Bani Haram
decisive words after reckless straying.
The last of eloquent speeches after confusion
أَتَهجواdo you satirize مَنone who رَوىrecited جَزَعاًout of panic وَلُؤماًand baseness

كَساقي اللَيلِ مِن كَدَرٍ وَصافي
Do you, from panic and baseness, lampoon one who recites,
They blamed whoever conveyed panic and misfortune
like a night-time cupbearer serving the turbid and the clear?
Like the night’s draft with pure and murky water

رُواةَ الشِعرِ تَطَّرِدُ القَوافي
So do not despair at reprisals, and leave alone
So do not panic because of curses and leave
the reciters of poetry; let the rhymes flow on.
The transmitters of poetry composing rhymes

Do you think, O son of Yashkur, that my poetry
Do you think, O Ibn Yashkur, that my poetry
is like a cloak-wearer's turning of his mantle's edge?
Is like the train of a cloak touching the hem?

Take your time: you will learn its aftermath, for in it
Calm yourself, it is painful, for in it
is the blood of blister beetles, laden with swift, deadly poison.
Is the blood of victims of lethal poison

And in me, when the clients throng one after another
And if sequels come attacking me
against me with withering abuse, is strength enough.
With rescuing answers to insult, I have enough

مَكانَ القِدرِ مِن وَسَطِ الأَثافي
We settled, in proud strength among Maʿadd,
We descended to take precedence over Ma’add
in the pot's place amid the hearthstones.
In the position of the pot from the middle of the court

بِمَنزِلَةِ الأَذِلّاءِ الضِعافِ
And Yashkur's station was, from of old,
While Yashkur, his dwelling was formerly
at the rank of the abased and weak.
In the position of the most miserable of the weak
وَيَشكُرُand Yashkur لاnot أَخوpossessed of كَرَمٍnobility فَيُخثىso be feared (reading uncertain)

And Yashkur is no noble man to be feared,
Yashkur has no noble brother so he sulks
nor a faithful man attentive to his neighbor.
Nor good neighbor he checks in on

A petty tribe, more abased than water-drawing beasts,
A tribe more disgraced than lizards
and more used to humiliation than patches—
And more acquainted with dishonor than old slippers

patches of sandals, when people walk on them,
Old slippers, when walked upon
trampled down, a mount for every barefoot man.
Trodden by all the barefooted

Ḥarām took you in, though they are slaves;
They hosted you, and they are slaves
one taken in may indeed shelter with another taken in.
And the guest may resort to the host

Does Yashkur boast of Banū Lujaym,
Does Yashkur boast about the Bani Lujaym
in contrariness—the utmost contrariness—
Contrary to what would happen contrary

Boasting to their female rabbi with an idiot
weakly bound, its breast-girth snapped?
Of weak lineage, broken teeth

Your claim is denied by the fact that Yashkur amid Saʿd
It was not fit for you that Yashkur be in the middle of Sa’d
stands as a riding-mate among the rear-riders.
In the position of colleagues in the rear seat

And who made newcomers like the foolish?

Endowed with insight into the doors of prosperities
but blind in judgment to the paths of upright restraint.
And blind of perception from ways of chastity
