Has the departing company’s breaking camp grieved you?

    Yes—and separation severs bonds.

I did not fear the tribe’s departure until there prowled upon us

a separation whose consequences I had never thought would come.

What ails separation? May God not bless separation!

And our anguish from it is like a gambler’s anguish.

and brings together among us those who harbour suspicions.

As though the eyes, sending forth at evening

showers of tears that fall unceasingly,

sweeping through the eyelids’ midst, driven

by a hidden, abiding flame of sorrow,

were the water-skins of a clumsy-handed, impoverished woman,

jolted at a trot by an untiring water-fetcher.

A rough water-carrier lashed them from above, and they were thrust

against the saddle-bow from the tame young camel’s back.

by the water-camels’ pounding through the sunken desert stretches.

whose stitching showed outside after lying within.

Until the baggage-sacks were scattered, and there bent

to their tent-poles the tall, weary serving-girls.

like the close-set flanks of a golden-coated, standing horse.

onto each great camel, its two flanks broad and arched.

Women in litters, taking in every stopping-place

a new captive, yet knowing nothing of freeing captives.

weeping over them when the lute-women’s hands draw tears from him.

on a day dividing those who stay from those who leave.

some beauties, and kept other beauties beyond reach.

A lovely, clever woman conveyed their words to me,

speaking intimately, or gazing at her companion’s words.

Yet, apart from the friendliness of her speech, she is no nearer

to men than a young, white-legged wild goat’s summer haunt.

is lush growth untouched by hooked gathering-sticks.

and listen with the attentiveness of water-diviners.

They circle a sole lord of pastures, never startled

in his valley by bows striking quivers.

Time has stretched his mouth wide, until he seems

a herdsman of the woolly bulls of al-Karis.

And a dusky waste, the hue of male bustards, where no

roaming creature is seen but sandgrouse calling to one another,

    مِنَ المَحلِ مُسوَدٌّ كَلَونِ المَساخِنِ

    blackened by drought like the colour of leather boots;

barren wastes with worn-out water-holes, where hope is lost

for the people of water in the branching gullies’ hollows.

‘Every doomed one has come to you on a doomed one’s feet.’

Like a wild cow’s back: if thirst-quenching water were sought there

by day, it would defy the search in the gullies’ depths.

in haste, though sleep had not overpowered me,

    a Bujawi she-camel, never circling a birthing-place,

whose milk no excessive milker’s grip has diminished.

As though the hollow beneath her, resting on her calloused pads,

were the resting-place of five birds settled on their breasts,

racing in dawn-darkness to the rock-pools’ scant dregs.

there but the mark where the wide-set saddle-pommel had lain,

and the mark of two stitched sandals he had cast down together,

    like a hill-gazelle’s footprint among the shrub-roots;

its folded end in his palm, its thongs fine,

faint as a snake’s passing, and shrivelled droppings,

    three, like ripe arak-berries clustered together;

and a hand’s impression, its fingertips having touched

    dust that sufficed when the water-sharing companion’s water was gone;

and the pressure-mark of the forepart of a turned foot,

    set down in haste by one afraid, not secure;

with which he aimed at al-Hatim’s right-hand corner.

    toward a mounting-step on the flank of a crooked, long-jawed she-camel,

with an outward-turned limb, clear of her breast-pad.

flying in a spray between her padded hooves.

to either side of a fleshy back, its vertebral branches concealed.

She chases the mirage across the waste, as there drove

his quarry the lair-haunting bull of the thicket.

for him after the hollows of al-Makamin had passed through summer.

When winter came, there drove him from the winding dunes’ fringe

into the sands a bitter northerly and a rain-darkened day.

and an arta tree on a curved dune between two sand-ridges.

All night he tirelessly endured a hedgehog’s night,

pacing down the dune with small birds’ restless darting,

and Qarra, darkened by worship and long resident.

on a white, woolly mound at the dune’s summit,

above the rocky heights, from Hayran or from Tuwazin.

a brilliance bursting forth after the inner folds.

two years since he had last known oils,

upon his head from a doomed, unyielding beast’s crushed flesh.

and his legs an acacia between a well-drawer’s twin ropes.

of those fed on game, not given to fighting one another,

    thickset, thorn-clawed, coarse of paw.

Once unleashed, he speeds like a sparsely feathered

fine-made arrow, driven by the bow’s worn belly.

A pack supports him, its concern upon the hunt,

racing ahead of the packs of trained hunting dogs.

dragonflies in the wind, their chests turned broadside.

swerving aside—and the surest flight is that of one who sees the danger—

for a long, desperate stretch; then fighting pride seized him,

with a swerve, the pride of a defender unweakened.

piercing with them the dogs’ hidden flank-folds.

like a skilled farrier lancing packhorses’ hoof-bruises.

various modes of a hard, enduring run.

He came through rejoicing, his hooves scoring the earth

like the alternating hands of soothsayers drawing divining-lines.

At the dune of al-Hinna’atayn he casts up with his horn

the thickets’ hanging boughs, like the tents of kings.

I am the son of those who reject injustice, of the house of Malik,

and Malik was indeed noble in its origins:

possessors of the earliest glorious deeds and lavish gifts

    of old, and equals to the hard-pressing enemy;

those entitled to the tributes levied in Tubba‘’s time

on every owner of wealth, far away or at hand.

What made them prevail on every bitter day was

noble sires, the choosing of chaste women,

and their oblique spear-thrusts at enemies; only

one who will not fight is made to suffer and accepts abasement.

They denied al-Nu‘man, on the day of Ru’ayya,

water, during a deadly season of summer heat.

They left Mas‘ud Nushba propped up,

struggling beneath a swaying, pliant spear from al-Khatt.

When the land was marked into lots, theirs won

its level stretches and its spacious watering-grounds.

Banu Malik are my people, gentle in their ways

toward those they deal with—except the ungentle.

Sons of war: famine’s harshness fans their fire,

when famine draws together men who bear old grudges.

When men say in dark adversity, ‘They have cooled,’ they blaze

against hardship, unlike the weary compromiser.

What people have ever matched foes

in Dhu al-Qarnayn’s two ages whom we have not matched?

Is glory anything but time-honoured lordship, generosity,

mending breaches, and steadfastness on the battlefield?

Many a numerous, noble clan have we salved,

and our bounty has passed to them with good fortune.

    وَلَولا عَوالينا نَشا غَيرَ لائِنِ

    It grew pliant, and the rain’s stirrings loosened over it;

but for our lofty spears, it would have grown unbending.

I am not content with what is not true contentment,

nor one to display complaint in this place or that.

Nor do I acknowledge a favour to me when none was done,

and I know the distinction between words of unequal worth.
