You run with love toward a goal,

hidden like fragrance in its rose,

nearer to souls in its sweetness,

the deeper it plunges into its remoteness.

When it is gone, upon its breast lies

a grave for that fragrance after its passing.

Such are love and its ends,

from its fleeting lightning or its thunder.

O you who made beauty burst forth in a world,

the heart is among your troops and among its troops.

The universe's enchantment flutters on his lips,

and love is born upon his cradle.

The world's troubles and its pains,

and the source of temptation, all come from him.

You gave me the heart that has not sobered

from beauty's intoxication and from its ecstasy.

And you, O you who tasted the flavor of passion

from the enchantment of his eyes and from his cheek,

your eyes, these two, have taken their hue

from beauty's pride or its glory.

Your eyes, these two, and what they hold

of calm enchantment and its fierceness,

are like one concealing a secret; within it lie

the universe's locks, and he has not revealed it.

O wakefulness of my world and its dreams,

and the worshipper's tenderness in his asceticism,

beauty's ideal perfection and its blessings,

and the fulfillment of what it promised before,

come, O anguish of my heart—and never

have your hands shrunk from burying it alive.

Let us welcome the spiritual in our love,

and raise what was buried alive from its grave.
