I would not, in my faith and belief in God's oneness, prefer

the mirage's deceptions to my provisions and my watering-place.

They beguiled me; enough for me that my account,

brimming, was spilled despite my thirst in the desert wastes.

I emptied it, and against my will it flowed down,

white as the soul, into a black, unyielding rock.

And I went away, not drawing from my own water

any water, nor was it blessed by my provisions.

I doubt; my doubt pains me, and I seek

the coolness of certainty, in whose pursuit my effort is spent.

I doubt, not willingly; and I am killed by

my doubt, and my stem withers from its whisperings.

And how often I seek refuge in Him in whom all creatures have sought refuge,

and seek shade in a parched, trackless wilderness.

May God protect me and the edifice of faith from doubts

crazed in judgment, that have risen around the One I worship.

If they have outwitted me in my devotions, how often have they led

me into dangers in my faith and belief in God's oneness?
