فَاِستَبقso keep دُنياكyour world حَسبيenough for me كنزtreasure آماليmy hopes
I care nothing for your wealth, whether stored treasure or money.
Your wealth is no treasure or property to me,
So keep your world; the treasure of my hopes is enough for me.
So keep your worldly goods - my hopes are all I need.
ماnot بِيof concern to me شَقيتyou suffered وَماand not بيof concern to me إِنif نَعمتyou prospered وَماand not
بِالقَلبin the heart زَهوpride الغِنىwealth أَوor رِقَةfrailty الحالcircumstances
I care not if you suffer, or if you prosper; nor
I have no misery, no joy in bounty or state -
is there in my heart the pride of wealth or the frailty of poverty.
In my heart is neither pride of riches nor plight.
دُنيايmy world وَهِيَand it is مِنof الدُنياthe world عَلىupon نَفسa soul

أَثرىricher مِنthan التبرgold dust أَوor أَسمىloftier مِنthan المالmoney
My world, itself part of this world, rests upon a soul
My world that is part of the wider world
richer than gold dust, or loftier than money.
Is richer than soil, higher than wealth's height.
وَهَبتI gave لِلناسto people مِنfrom دُنياthe world مَطامعهمtheir ambitions
ماwhat عِندَهاit holds ليfor me مِنof نعمىbliss وَاِقبالand good fortune
I gave people, from the world of their ambitions,
I gave people their worldly desires from it -
whatever bliss and good fortune it holds for me.
It has for me no bounty or fortune bright.
فَليَترُكواso let them leave ليfor me أَحلاميmy dreams وَماand what نَسجتthey wove

So let them leave me my dreams and what they have woven
So let them leave my dreams that I have spun,
around me out of hardship, if my condition does not please them.
My state of distress, if it does not delight.
وَهَبتهمI gave them مِنof لَذذاتيmy pleasures وَصَمتand I fasted فَلَمso not
أُطعمI am fed لِذيذاًsomething delicious وَلَمand not أُفطرI break my fast عَلىunder حالa circumstance
I gave them of my pleasures and fasted, so I was not
I gave them my pleasures and went silent -
fed anything delicious, nor did I break my fast under any circumstance.
Not fed on delicacies nor broke fast overnight.
وَلاnor غَنيتI grew rich وَماand not أَبغيI seek وَلاnor رَغبتdesired
دُنيايmy world فيfor وَفرةabundance مِنهاof it وِإِقلالand scarcity
I have not grown rich, nor do I seek to; nor has
I sang no riches, wanted no more, no less -
my world desired this world's abundance or scarcity.
My world in its plenty and dearth kept me right.
وَعَشتand I lived أَنعَمmore at ease فيin عَدميmy poverty وَيُسعدنيand it gladdens me
إِنيthat I تَخففتI unburdened myself مِنof إِصريmy burden وَأَثقاليand my heavy loads
And I lived more at ease in my poverty, and it gladdens me
I lived blessed in my nothingness, pleased that
that I have shed my burden and my heavy loads.
I was lightened of my burdens and their weight.

فَماso what لَهُمfor them بيwith me لاnot أَهليmy family وَلاnor آليmy kin
Those people—I have not explored their truths;
I never probed the essence of those people,
so what have they to do with me—neither my family nor my kin?
To me they are neither kith nor kin outright.

فيهاfor them خَوادعdeceptions ماwhat يَطفوfloats مِنof الآلthe mirage
I shunned the falsehood of my days, and was made to lose desire
I shunned the vanity of my days, and it rendered
for them by the deceptions of the floating mirage.
Me aloof from the guiles that visibility excites.
