Enchantment is in you, and within you is one of its sources:
The magic is in you and in you are its causes
The ease of one proud of his youth's brilliance.
The softness of adolescence with the genius of its youth
ياO مَعهديmy institute وَمَحطand resting place of عَهدthe days of صِبايmy boyhood

O my institute and resting place of my boyhood days,
My institute and the place of my youth's pact
What a home, lowering its gaze before distinguished youth!
From a house whose youthfulness comes knocking

مَنHe who شادَraised مَجدكyour glory فيin قَديـمancient كِتابـهHis Book
He allotted you endurance in His decrees—
The destiny of eternity is yours
He who raised your glory in His ancient Book,
Of those who elevated your glory in his ancient book
وَأَفاضَand poured forth فيكَinto you مِنof الهَـديguidance آياتـهHis signs

And poured into you His signs of guidance,
And imparted to you verses of guidance
And a full measure of love and enchantment.
And of passion and magic filled his quota

Today longing drives me, and I turn back,
Today, yearning drives me to lean
Lovesick and trembling, toward its thresholds.
Confused towards your threshold

وَجَرىand ran وَأَجفَلand shied away خاطِريmy mind مِنfrom بابةits gate
Love outran my eye on its racecourse,
Passion preceded my eyes in its race
And ran, while my mind shied away from its gate.
And flowed and stirred my thoughts from oblivion
وَدَعتI left غَضtender صِبايmy boyhood تَحتَbeneath ظِلالهits shade
وَدَفنتand I buried بيضwhite سنيmy years فيin مِحرابـهits prayer niche
I left my tender boyhood beneath its shade,
And the prime of my youth called under its shades
And buried my white years in its prayer niche.
And the eggs of my years were buried in its shrine
وَلَقيتand I encountered مِنfrom عنتthe vexation of الزيودthe Zayds مَشاكِـلاًdifficulties
وَبَكيتand I wept مِنbecause of عمروAmr وَمِنand because of أَعرابـهhis grammatical parsing
And faced difficulties from the vexations of the Zayds,
And I faced problems from the tyranny of chiefs
And wept over Amr and his grammatical parsing.
And cried from Amr and his bedouins

I flourished; it seasoned me with its dews,
It blossomed and its phrases delighted me
And I gathered a handful of its grapes.
And I bought with full hands from its grapes
رَفعraised الشَبابthe young إِلَيكَtoward you مِـنfrom أَقلامِـهِtheir pens

عَمـداpillars مركـزةfirmly set عَلـىupon آدابِــهِtheir learning
The young raised toward you, from their pens,
Youth raised to you from their pens
Pillars firmly grounded in their learning.
Pillars focused on its manners
وَتَسابَقواand they raced لِلمَجـدfor glory فيـكَwithin you وَكُلنـاand each of us

And they raced for glory within you; each of us
And they competed for glory in you and all of us
Clung to the right to glory, one of its seekers.
Clung to the right of glory from its students

فيon الأَرضthe earth مُنقَلبturned back عَلىupon أَعقابـهits heels
Until glory becomes—though it is withered,
Until glory becomes overturned upon its heels
On earth, turned back upon its heels—
In the land, being transformed upon its consequences

Images with firmly secured bonds within a budding youth,
Images firmly tied in progeny
A young man, with those images imprinted upon his nerves.
Modern images tied to its nerves
وَالمَجدand glory أَجدَرmore fitting بِالشَبـابfor the young وَأَنمـاand yet only

And glory better befits the young; yet
And glory is more deserving of youth, and rather
People feel only resentment toward its possessors.
It originates for people from its people

It is my institute; and if I remember its kindness,
It is my institute, and if I kept its making
Then I am the son of its spreading tree, who sang of it.
Then I am the son it sang of

بِفَتىabout a youth يَمتis related إِلَيـهِto it فـيthrough احسابـهhis lineage
So I would shield the pious young from spreading slander
So I seek refuge for the progeny of piety lest they tremble
About a youth linked to it through his lineage.
For a youth who stretches to it in its reckoning
ماnot زِلتI have ceased أَكبَرI grow فيamong الشَبابthe young وَأَغتَديand I go out in the morning

I kept growing among the young, going out each morning,
I have not ceased to grow greater in youth and overreach
And returning each evening amid ‘Bravo!’ and ‘Hurrah for him!’
And roam between weeping and frolic in it
حَتّىuntil رَميتI was assailed وَلَستُand I am not أَولthe first كَوكَـبstar

Until I was assailed; I am not the first star
Until I threw and I’m not the first planet
Whose splendid blaze Time begrudged.
The same times conferred upon it their shooting star

They said—and souls quaked and fluttered,
They said and souls trembled and scared
In panic; the lion of its forest raged and seethed—
Frightened, confused and the castles of its forests roared

‘The son of Yusuf has disbelieved—what a wretch!—and transgressed,
The son of Yusuf blasphemed in misery and transgressed
And rebelled!’ Yet I neither care nor heed.
And rebelled and I do not care or mind

They said, ‘Burn him! No, crucify him! No, scatter
They said, “Burn him.” But, “Crucify him.” But, “Tear asunder
To the wind his unclean bones and his hide!’
for the wind his rotten bones and skull.”

And if there were anything to seek beyond death
And if above death there were means
For a man, some means of reaching it would have been stretched toward me.
For a man to stretch to from its causes
