    كَفى بِدَمعي ثارا

    Do not take revenge on my heart;

    My tears are vengeance enough.

    Your mistreatment is injustice enough for me:

    Aversion and turning away.

    I believe in beauty as coolness,

    And in passionate longing as fire,

    And in the church, and in whoever circled

    Around it and sought refuge—

    With the faith of one who worships beauty

    In the eyes of Christians.

    ـن كبرة أَو نفارا

    Indeed, I have found you, O beauty,

    To be pride or aversion;

    ـر بِسمة وَاِفتِرارا

    And I have experienced you, O mouth,

    As a smile and parted lips;

    And I have known you, O eyelid,

    As a tyrannical blade.

    I implore you by love and by God,

    And—and by burning tears—

    Will you not cast off beauty's pride

    And remember neighborly ties?
