ياO دهرُTime حسبُكَenough from you قدindeed أطَلْتَyou have prolonged نحيبيmy sobbing
وَتَرَكْتَنيand you left me فيin موطِنيmy homeland كغريبِlike a stranger
O Time, enough! You have prolonged my sobbing,
O fate, you have prolonged my wailing,
And left me in my homeland like a stranger.
And left me a stranger in my own abode,
وسَلَبْتَنيand you stripped me of ثوبَthe robe of السُّرورِjoy بجامعٍbecause of one combining
ماthat which بينَbetween وَصْفَيْthe two qualities of خادمٍa servant وأديبِand a man of letters
And stripped me of joy's robe because of one who combined
Robbing me of the dress of joy in one swoop—
The two qualities of a servant and a man of letters.
Whether a servant's description or a scholar's ode.
فالشِّعْرُso the verse منِّيfrom me والدموعُand the tears لآلئٌpearls
منfrom نظمِthe stringing of طَبْعَيْthe two natures of عاشِقٍa lover وأديبِand a man of letters
So my verse and tears are pearls,
Poetry flows from me and my tears are pearls,
Strung by the two natures of a lover and a man of letters.
From the making of my nature, loving and erudite.
قدindeed غابَhas vanished عنfrom رَبْعيmy dwelling هلالٌa crescent moon مُقْمِرٌradiant
فيin أُفْقِthe horizon of تربِيَتيmy nurturing وفيand in تأدِيبيmy instruction
Gone from my dwelling is a crescent that shone
The brilliant new moon has disappeared from my land,
On the horizon of my nurturing and my instruction.
From my upbringing’s horizon and from my education.
فالآنَso now يطلعُhe rises فيin سِوىsomewhere other than دارِيmy home ولاand never
ينفكُّceases فيهِconcerning him القلبُthe heart رَهْنَhostage to نحيبِsobbing
So now he rises somewhere other than my home, and never
Now it rises in a land not my own, yet my heart
Does my heart cease to be hostage to sobbing over him.
Cannot cease its weeping and its woeful plight.
نَدٌّa perfume blend نفيسٌprecious عندَwith غيريsomeone other than me فائحٌwafting fragrance
وأراهُand I see it منfrom عَجْنيmy kneading ومنand from تركِيبيmy blending
A precious perfume wafts its fragrance in another's keeping,
A precious gift is with another, fragrantly displayed—
And I see it as the work of my kneading and my blending.
I see it is of my own making and composition.
وثمينُand precious عِقْدٍa necklace عندwith غيريsomeone other than me لائحٌgleaming
وأراهُand I see it منfrom نَظْميmy stringing ومنand from تَرْتيبيmy arranging
And a precious necklace gleams in another's keeping,
A necklace of gems is with another, luminously arrayed—
And I see it as the work of my stringing and my arranging.
I see it strung by my own hand in its configuration.
