ألا يا غُرَّةَ العَليا
ألاLo! ياO نُكْتَةَquintessence of الدُّنياthe world
ألا يا نُكْتَةَ الدُّنيا
Lo, O radiant brow of lofty honor!
O you, pride of the lofty heights!
Lo, O quintessence of the world!
O you, gem of the world!
وشمسَand sun of الأرضِthe earth فردَpeerless one of الدَّهthe age (first part)
وشمسَ الأرضِ فردَ الدَّه
رِcompletion of 'the age' عينَeye of السؤدَدِnobility اليمنىthe right
رِ عينَ السؤدَدِ اليمنى
And sun of the earth, peerless one of the age,
Sun of the land, apple of the right eye of eternity!
the right eye of nobility!
Has Abu Yahya no shame
أماwas ... not? استحياashamed أبوAbu (father of) يحيىYahya
أما استحيا أبو يحيى
لفَضِّfor spilling المهجةthe heart's blood الكُبرىthe greatest
لفَضِّ المهجة الكُبرى
Was Abu Yahya not ashamed
For the outpouring of his great passion?
to spill the noblest heart's blood?
If through you the present world opens,
لئِنْif indeed فُتِحتwas opened بكthrough you الدُّنياthis world
لئِنْ فُتِحت بك الدُّنيا
لقدsurely فُتِحَتْwas opened بكَthrough you الأُخرىthe next world
لقد فُتِحَتْ بكَ الأُخرى
If indeed this world was opened through you,
Through you opens the world to come!
surely the next was opened through you.
