    To your growing wealth goes my complaint of poverty.

    May you be spared affliction; shelter me from affliction.

    I am indeed parched for your generosity, through which

    I hope for a draught of your bounty as it slakes thirst.

    So, by God, I do not know, though I am confident,

    whether to complain that you are too busy to give me gifts, or have forgotten.

    I ceased pressing you, that I might see you show

    greater generosity by giving of your own accord.

    فها أنَذا منكم أُحاولهُ حَلْوَى

    For the sweetest bounty is that obtained in times of hardship;

    so here I am, seeking it from you as a sweetmeat.

    ولكنْ طلابي حيثُ تَنفعني الجدوى

    Nor does its delay make me doubt your bounty;

    but I seek it when bounty can benefit me.
