هكذاthus الحرُّthe noble man إذاwhen الحرّthe noble man افتَقرْbecame poor
يَستقلَّdeems insignificant الحرصَgreed أوor يشكوcomplains of القَدَرْfate
Such is the noble man when he falls into poverty:
Thus the free man, when in need,
He thinks little of greed, or complains of fate.
Bears fortune or complains of fate,
واستمدَّand draw الخيرgood منfrom معْدَنِهِits source
وسلِand ask for الحاجةَthe need منfrom وجهthe face of الظَّفَرْtriumph
And draw good from its source,
And draws good from its origin,
And ask for what you need from the face of triumph.
Asking relief from triumph’s face.
خَلَّleave نزْوىNizwa واستَجرْand seek refuge فيin سَمَدٍSamad
بسماحِin the generosity of الأزْدِthe Azd منfrom بُخْلِthe stinginess of مُضَرْMudar
Leave Nizwa, and seek refuge in Samad,
He left rest to toil on the plain
In the generosity of the Azd, from the stinginess of Mudar.
With Sa’d’s generosity, not Mu’dhir’s greed,
وأبوand Abu القاسمal-Qasim يمّمهُseek him out تكنْyou will be
مثلَlike غيثrain جادpoured abundantly أوor بحرa sea زَخرْsurged
And Abu al-Qasim—seek him out, and you will be
And my lord motivates him, making
Like rain that poured abundantly, or a sea that surged.
Him like rain that pours or sea that swells,

كاهتزازlike the quivering of الصّارمthe cutting sword العَضبِkeen-edged الذَّكَرْhard-steeled
A lord who quivers with valor and bounty,
A chief who shakes with might and bounty
Like the quivering of a keen, hard-steeled sword.
As the angry, valiant sword shakes clear.

God allotted the heights of honor as the share of Abu
By God’s will the Exalted, and my father’s—
al-Qasim the benevolent, Ali ibn Umar.
The best of men—’Ali son of ‘Umar.
