O Abu Hasan, surely lordship and glory

were bestowed on you, a legacy from an heir of Azd.

And you, when al-Atik and his kin are counted,

are the most exalted in person and noblest in ancestry,

with the broadest homestead and the best-defended domain,

and the most generous of hand and most faithful to a pledge.

You have attained the noblest rank among Nabhan,

and gained the purest essence and unalloyed ancestral honor.

And you were granted forbearance, endurance, and self-restraint,

and patience, so you harbored neither rancor nor aversion.

And you are a generous man whose wealth is ruled by generosity,

so he enriches those in need or honors the visiting delegation.

    And you are now known to possess all excellence;

when the chieftains are named, you are unrivaled in it.

And he knows that the most beneficial part of a man’s wealth

is what wards off blame and wins him praise.

Thus no free man remains whom you have not bound with a favor,

who might then resent being called its giver’s slave.

May you live on for us, O Dhahl, in exalted rank

and dominion; may your fortune find blessing and happiness.
