حَديثٌ لعَمر العامريّة صَادقُ
Lo, the talebearers claim that you are in love.
Alas, the slanderers claim you are a lover,
By the life of the ʿĀmirī woman, their report is true.
A true tale, by the life of Al-Ameriya, sincere,
جُنوناًmadly علِقنَاهاwe fell in love with her علىin ضَلّةِthe delusion of الهَوىpassion

ففيمَوقد حانَ المشيبُالعَلائِقُ
Madly we loved her, led astray by passion.
We hung this madness on the straying of passion,
Then why these attachments, now that gray hair has come?
So why, when grey hairs have come, are there still attachments?

Amid the talebearers, we keep affection for her,
She has, in our eyes, despite the slanderers, affection
and remembrance that stirs longing, despite what distance has wrought.
And memories of her remain, however far absence may spread.

Do you think I have turned away out of fear?
Yet despite this aloofness, I am truly in love.
That I have become, due to this rejection, blameworthy?

Your coyness bewitches; your youthful bloom is peerless.
Your coquetry is seductive, your gaze transcendent.

They made me dizzy with their giddiness.
