It is the lovesick one who weeps, and the love-enthralled who lies awake,

Even if the collared dove has not stirred him.

My weeping and sleeplessness—I did not say my longing was stirred

By the east wind's breeze and the gleaming lightning.

At this my eyes smart, until their slumber

Forsakes them, or sorrow's blood wells up.

Nothing but remembrance of Umaymah assails me,

And a phantom vision of Umaymah visits by night.

Were it not for the consolations of hope—and sometimes

I have comforted myself with them—my soul would nearly expire.

How wondrous my endurance! What passion I conceal,

And what longing the depths of my heart enclose!

    لقيت بها في الحب فوقَ الّذي لَقوا

    I have surpassed the people of love in strange ordeals;

Through them I have met in love more than they ever met.

Were Jamil granted long life into my own age,

And complaining of love, I would teach him how to love.

I kept lamenting estrangement until we were assailed

By separation's hand; separation is more disastrous and intractable.

Ah, may the watcher's eye be put out, appointed

To watch over us, and may our slanderer's speech be shattered!

I said before separation, while our company was united,

Fearful of what separation might do:

O our neighbors, how lovely the union between us,

And how sweet, were it not that we do not fear.

We rejoice in the days of union, yet sometimes

The thought of parting passes through us, and we grow afraid.

I have not forgotten the day of separation, when that morning we

Grieved with complaints of love and choked on tears.

A severing departure from Umaymah came between us,

While my gaze flashed at the place of parting.

Farewell terrified the two of us, me and her—

Two fallen victims of love, one captive and one free.

Fearing distance, her cheek pressed against mine.

O raven of separation, if one morning you

Parted from the one you love, you would no longer caw.

And you, pale camels, if you bore some of my yearning,

On separation's morning the earth would keep slipping beneath you.

And you who slander us, if you met what

We endure, fabricated tales would fail you.

The ties of separation are severed, and the dwelling has receded

From us, yet still we yearn.

I long for the wearer of the sash; between us lie

Slanderers, guards, and a bare, barren desert.

I say to her, with terror between us,

And before her a gate, a wall, and a moat:

O gazelle in a sandy hollow, who lifted

    Her neck toward us, startled and watchful;

O full moon at the summit of a ban-tree branch,

    Swaying above a sandhill, green with leaves;

    O heart's desire, beyond whom

It has no other attachment in the bonds of love,

Trust your tormented lover: he will not break faith

With you; in love's captivity he is bound.

What you entrusted to me has not been lost; it is

Pledges that grow within a restless breast.

The cords of affection with me grow ever new

Despite distance, while some cords wear out.

And I remain as you have known me:

Our secret is not revealed, nor is our love diluted.
