If one day noble deeds worth preserving are recalled,

then praise in verse is their most precious treasure.

    And not every poem is like the one I utter;

but indeed, the best poetry is that which secures sustenance.

So its truest is that spoken of the best of his people,

and their noblest in deeds and finest in character:

Abu Hasan al-Azdi, Dhuhl—and how excellent is

al-Azd’s young man, Dhuhl—and he is truly their lord!

Chief of all Banu Nabhan—and all of them

are kings; the sons of this world are their slaves in bondage.

O Banu Umar, indeed God in His kindness

has spread sustenance to everyone through your hands.

You gained mastery over all people when you provided

them, through generosity, freedom from their needs’ bondage [probable reading].

So they sought wealth from none but Banu Umar,

and found no roads except those leading to Samad.

Abu Hasan, O Dhuhl, you are the one whose

radiant virtues fill the West and the East.

And you are the one who surpassed kings in lordship,

and rose above them in merit, outstripping them in precedence.

You climbed the steps of glory with easy striving,

to where no one but you can ascend.

Your protection, in its might, is sought to ward off harm,

and rain is sought from the lightning of your face.

May you endure to preserve noble deeds and possess them,

for the endurance of noble deeds depends on your enduring.

And may your sons live for all time, O Dhuhl, a life

that gladdens you [probable reading], in which you neither grieve nor suffer.
