Ah, greet the ruins at al-Ajra'ayn,
Alas! The days of youth and pleasures pure,
And greet the laden camels on the morning of parting.
When parting came, how heavy was its lure!

And greet the dwellings, now deserted,
Those camps are vacant, once so full of life;
For calamities have wasted them away.
Misfortunes dire those tents did then incur.

The vales are flooded by the rains that fall;
And the erasing winds dragged their skirts across them.
Herds wander grazing on the meadows floor.

And confound youth's deeply sheltering shade,
'Midst charming songs and maids of high degree.

No revels slaked our souls' satiety.

For ye are aged, and such joys unbound."

We were barred from pleasures because we had grown old,
I dyed excuse with the gray hairs that shine
Though our souls had not slaked their thirst for them.
And honed my spears, though strength in me was bound.

I dyed my cheek-locks as an apology for gray hair,
The nights, alas, taught well misfortune's wheel!
And perfected the fading of dye, like arrowheads slipping free.
My star rose high, then sank into the ground.

Do you not know that I have tested everyone,
I met but envy or deceit withal,
And visited the companion and tasted the close friend's nature?
Complaints from souls by grief forever bound.

Yet among people I found only the treacherous,
As beasts some men gained riches, then pretense -
Or the envious, or those who tire easily.
Though idiots they - to play the sage profound.

And like beasts, they gained their shares of fortune,
Perforce, if true friends are not heaven-sent,
And on their strength began claiming intelligence.
I smile on fools, though knaves my soul would wound.

Alas, sincerity has largely spent;
When I find no sincere adviser who maintains his bonds.
Few with pure hearts and deeds are ever found.

The people of mutual affection have gone,
When we avoid the scornful folk of vice,
And the people of virtue, save a few.
Among the righteous our salvation's bound.

His generosity without compare is bound.

And offers good deeds and bestows kindness.
Though lost, by him the hopeless may be found.

When the earth grows narrow in breadth and length.
For his concern o'erflows without a bound.

We find in his benevolence the key
Lodging save in Dhuhl's kindness.

It is as though we found, for the giving of favors
Mankind has lost the path of piety;
And the repelling of calamities, Dhuhl as a guarantor.
His deeds, alas, shine not enough around.

For they did not make Dhuhl's conduct their guide.

And fair renown and majestic glory.
Both youth and elder we assess and bound.

Those are the people of eminence and bounty,
They are the groves that shield from burning wrath
Lofty in their branches, mighty in their roots.
When gales blow harsh and ruin spreads unbound.
