What lay hidden in the dwelling's buried remains was stirred

by a ruined campsite at al-Liwa, the bend of al-Awda'.

It stripped away patience and solace, and kindled

    the searing fire of sorrow in the entrails;

and drew forth longing, consuming heartache, and grief,

and lifted the blockage from the lid of a mote-filled eye.

It poured forth tears, flowing as water flows

through the holes of a torn, capacious waterskin.

A ruined campsite, erased since Da'd's days by

    the crosswind and al-Quma'.

Nights stripped its neck of ornament, as did the onslaughts

of the steady raincloud's pouring showers.

Its traces were effaced and vanished,

and it donned the ample garments of obliteration.

If it now lies desolate, with tawny, slender, long-necked gazelles

and wide-eyed wild cows bending tenderly over their calves,

the beholder saw there nothing but a camp-ditch,

barely visible to the beholder's eye.

Yet how many a coquettish woman swayed there,

    full-calved, tender-skinned, and dark-eyed,

full-hipped, supple in figure, one who breaks

    her promises, delicate and virginal;

a graceful maiden, her wrists and anklets snug with fullness,

    affectionate, languid, and gracefully swaying.

On her dusky lips after sleep is the taste of water released

from night rainclouds, and of honey and reddish wine.

She has a voice that makes the ibex lose its footing,

and makes the dry, smooth rock shatter.

The fingertips of her dyed hand are stained with lovers' blood,

though the stain has been explained away as henna.

How often I visited Da'd there, while Da'd

stood among enemies whose concern was to destroy me.

    ومَلامِى في حبها إرَائِى

    Reproach never made me forget Da'd;

blaming me for loving her only spurs me on.

Da'd, why not heal a tormented heart,

driven mad by the scorching fire of desire?

Da'd, how often I spent the night lovesick for you, yearning,

a night companion to the star and al-Jawza'.

And for you I crossed a mighty, densely massed army,

to meet you—it was made up of my enemies.

Da'd, distance has not made me forget you,

no, nor your long refusal to meet me.

So pity a stricken lover, saddened by

the faded ruins and the passing hours.

And from you it struck him, slaying him with longing—

the arrow of glances from a wide eye.

    And wastelands with dust-grey reaches,

    where owls and echoes lament,

fearsome places, with the jinn's eerie cries within,

    like uproar mingled with uproar,

I crossed while night was dark, riding a she-camel

with taut forelegs, sturdy and thick-cheeked,

noble-bred as a breeding stallion, eager after

night travel for swift trotting and running.

She outstrips the slender, small-headed ostrich when the pale camels

    become worn out from fatigue.

After weeks of far-ranging travel, she will bring me to

the true-hearted youth, the jewel of assemblies,

the son of the sun of guidance, Imam Abu Bakr,

    the pious defender of the radiant Sunnah;

through whom glory was raised after collapse,

    and through whom error was torn down after being built;

through whom ignorance's dwelling became a wasteland,

and through whom knowledge shone after obscurity.

O refuge of the distressed in every calamity,

O you of noble mothers and fathers,

O radiance of the two suns, O meeting-place of the two seas,

O master of warning and exhortation,

O sustainer of orphans and all people,

O lavish giver of blessings amid hardship,

O imam of al-Furra' in learning, O you

who are a lamp in the darkness of intractable questions.

I have a heart in which ignorance and wickedness have encamped,

    so it is a storehouse of rust;

sluggish and feeble toward guidance and noble qualities,

quick toward error and shameful deeds.

In its ignorance it blindly followed the self and desire,

so it is enthralled by corrupt opinions.

Long has it been enamored of the melodies

    of the singing girl's pipes,

and of sipping reddish wine and smelling lavender

from the lips of the filed-toothed, dusky-lipped woman.

So polish the rust from its mirror and straighten it

with the straightening rod of discipline and instruction in recitation.

And soften it: how often you have softened, through remembrance

of you, hearts harder than smooth rock!

Come to its aid, for it is more wretched, if not

rescued, than the hamstringer of the high-humped she-camel.

And blessings, like wine and the fragrance of musk,

upon the one singled out for the Night Journey,

as long as the grove's gray doves sing there, and a sigh rises from

the longing of the distant, love-bewildered one.
