    فماذا يفيد الشعرُ والبحرُ والروي

    This wayward sinner has exceeded the bounds of censure;

so what use are poetry, meter, and rhyme?

    Minds have indeed wearied of reckoning his faults;

so my silence and lengthy censure amount to the same.

If a noble man one day possesses glory,

this man possesses indecency and baseness.

Slow to great deeds, quick to lewdness,

he joins the ranks of idle pleasures and folly.

He squandered his youth in obedience to Satan,

while withdrawing from obedience to God.

    Base, disobedient, depraved—his heart enfolds

what the heart of Iblis enfolds.

He persists on the path of error; and if you seek

to set him straight on guidance's path, he turns crooked, twisting away.

    Defiant, obstinate, obscene, cunning, diseased—

his evil deeds have encrusted his diseased heart.

I say to whoever hides this man's faults from himself

and ignorantly believes him to be on a straight path:

You have concealed many faults in this petty sinner,

as Umm Mudwi concealed her son's disease.

You drew an outcast near and advanced a man whose lot

is a plunge into the depths, far from glory and advancement.

He will flatter you with praise if he has stuffed himself

with bread and meat, dried or roasted.

So do not be fooled by praise, for treachery is a habit

of his, and he habitually lampoons when he goes hungry.

How often good things have come in his absence,

and how often calamity has traveled wherever he intends to go!

So be patient; do not complain of a burden you have shouldered,

heavy as it is, just as one cauterized does not complain of fire.
