The trace of an encampment beside the spring

stirred what the traces of encampments had not stirred.

And the dwellings of al-Tāmm enslaved my heart

and barred my eyelids from sleep's visitation.

In Wādī al-Ṭarīq, a dwelling on the ridge,

    and a dwelling, altered, below the ridge;

that are among the causes of streaming tears.

like tattoo marks edged with recurring tracery.

And al-Aḍayyān, with dwellings along its sides,

    and dwellings at Rīʿat al-Yattūʿ.

O dwellings of al-Rabāb, you have stirred my longing,

my remembrance, my anguish, and my ardor.

Here I am upon your heights, streaming with tears,

while sighs boil between my ribs.

I wish your bygone time would return, but

the time that has passed has no return.

Do you imagine I have forgotten my days

within you, when your company was gathered together?

Our time at al-Liwā, when union was sweet,

    unclouded by fear of farewell.

And love was lush in its gardens and compliant,

while the sorrowing, reproached one would not obey.

dark-eyed, with brilliant whites, kohl-rimmed, and startled,

swaying upon the hills at evening

no full moon rises as he does.

and the fragrance of gardens in springtime.

For he is like night and morning, and like a sand dune,

and like a spear, and a fallen, hand-reared fawn,

and an oryx cow lingering behind, and a tender branch,

and siyāk-tree thorns and a white caterpillar.

glory, and counted it in the collection.

    after pursuing a heinous deed?

so she lives as a stranger, of low standing.

A profligate, he abandoned prayer, a constant practitioner

of lying and sorcery, greedy throughout the land.

He violates the sanctity of every veil,

never content in the realm of waywardness.

She was stripped bare for a stretch of time, or longer,

clothed in nothing but her skin, like a nursing infant.

to rival me, though you are incapable?

You claim learning, eloquence, and poetry,

and knowledge of endowments and squaring,

despite ignorance of rhetoric, creed, and grammar,

and ignorance of languages and the branches of law.

Indeed, a person's thinking cannot be complete

without knowledge of predicate and subject,

and the terminology of every discipline, and both modes

of its intended scope—narrowing and broadening.

Do not measure me against yourself in honor and glory:

the slow is not like the swift.

who races it on a limping crossbred nag.

Do not suppose poetry to be every utterance

    loosely woven, perpetually stumbling,

    not effective in its meanings

or words, laden with strain and fragmentation,

crammed with invective, treading a course

devoid of charm, with every repulsive expression.

If a listener seeks the pleasure of hearing

it, it offers that listener no delight.

You have ruined poetry with solecisms

and weakness of meter—yet you are no waster.

    إِنَّمَا أنتَ صُورَةٌ مِن رَجِيعِ

    Whoever lampooned you did not lampoon a person;

you are merely a shape made of excrement.

his prayer is void in the frequented place of worship.

    from filthy roots and branches.

whomever you choose, nor one to bring benefit.

Lampoon me, if you will, with rhymes

like my rhymes, whose recurring sound is sweet.

Do not adopt my rhyme-letter, slavishly following

me in it; the accomplished poet is no follower.

And seize, if you can, a subtle point of meaning

and a polished extra rhyme constraint that sounds well.

Poetry is not sound without clear expression,

and original meanings, and rhetorical ornament,

such as composite wordplay, or wordplay

that is complete, or a touch of dual-term explication,

or antithesis, or enumeration and distribution, or foreshadowing

with exquisite [unclear word] and variation,

or other exquisite rhetorical ornaments besides these,

beautiful in rhyme and rhythmic cadence.

and the arrow of submission struck your treachery.

by the All-Knowing, All-Hearing's choice concerning them—

or the exalted anything but exalted.

and blessings upon the interceding Prophet.
