نَارَ غَرَامٍ في الحَشَا حَامِيَّه
The talk of the maiden al-Māmīḍa kindled
The blazing talk of the alluring roe
a blazing fire of passion within my breast.
Kindles in my heart a raging fire's glow

The beholder, when she gazes, imagines her
Seen from afar she's like a frightened doe
a startled, panting mother of a fawn.
A mother doe startled, ready to go

She is the one from whom I was given love to drink,
She's the one whose love I was made to know
and I suffer what I suffer from yearning for her.
Whose longing leaves me restless, to and fro

In her mouth, after sleep, is ambergris,
After sorrow's passed, her lips bestow
or a honeycomb, or pure wine.
Sweet wine, pure honey, fragrant amber's flow
