for a lover who sees lightning to watch it.

urging streaming rain from its piled-up clouds.

You would think its thunder the bellowing of camel-stallions

meeting rival stallions amid a herd of unbred she-camels.

she laid on me what she had laid on no one.

if she granted me her heartfelt affection.

And it is fitting that I answer my companion.

and delicate fingers, and a fair, full forearm,

when the thoroughbreds streamed with sweat

and the nose-rein's tug wore down the high-humped camels.

She sets a light hoof against the flint,

    rounded, with a notched toe.

to mend the frail, severed cord.

People tried his ill luck and shunned him,

    سَ العُتِلَّ المُمَاذِقَ المَذمُومَا

    blameworthy, vile, ignorant, a cowardly

    wretch, brutal, false-hearted, reviled;

    tale-bearing, foul-looking, dissolute, a

deceiver, cowardly, full of faults and sin.

You—circumstance is witness, and its testimony

is best fitted to decide between disputants—

you bear no mark of goodness or guidance.

and called 'the full crescent' a solecism.

if you examined linguistic usage and understood.

we had never known al-Rabab as a male companion before.

the solecism was clear in 'my thirsty herds.'

you are not blamed for anything that disgraces you.

and it is baseness—has blame not been blame enough?

sound when verse has grown sick.

wounds within the breast for all time.

to answer me, make your rhyme-letter mim.

and tangled meaning; attend to a weighty sense.

    Beware deviation, inconsistent rhyme-vowels, and
