Tell me truly: has the time of their parting now come?

You tear your heart apart from its bitter pain,

and make the tears of both eyes flow until

it is as though bitter sap lay in both eyes.

And the ember in your entrails flares when

you are told outright of their imminent parting.

The carefree one says to you, not knowing

that love's anguish is the hardest thing to endure,

and that you are infatuated, besotted, tormented,

and a lover's tears cannot be held back:

Hold back the tears you shed; or—

else, if you shed them, [the closing phrase is unclear].

So I told him: Leave me, for within me is

a burning grief whose embers have scorched the heart's core.

    ومَن يَملِكهُ يَفتَتِنِ افتِتَانَا

    Chaste, Udhri love has possessed me by force;

whoever it possesses is utterly enthralled.

An innocent young gazelle stirred my anguish,

    draping pearls around his collarbones.

As though embers scattered in the darkness

were his bright, unveiled beauty blazing into view.

He lifts his head like a young gazelle that stayed behind, and gazes

like a graceful gazelle, and sways like a bān tree.

And he veils his sun in a pitch-black night,

deeply dark, and smiles with daisy-white teeth.

And when he smiles, he reveals eight

precious teeth that put costly pearls to shame.

As though the gums of his cool, pearly mouth were dusted

with antimony, or he were spitting forth a shawl.

And a bashām branch serves the wine among

sand-grubs that he moves about as fingers.

And his spear-like stature drags a curved sand-dune,

faltering whenever he tries to rise with it.

As though his anklets were bent and clasped tightly

    around a well-tended she-camel's shank [unclear epithet].

And his two eyes rend every heart,

as though their glance contained a spearhead.

The inexperienced man, when he sees him, imagines

that he helped Time in his own making.

And you would take his two sides for fine woven cloth,

soft to the touch, embroidered and beautiful.

In him radiance reaches its limit; whoever claims that

the ages could be tasked to produce his equal has lied.

I say, having seen Umām turn away

in her heart, though she had entered a bond:

Umāmah, whoever has grown familiar with the nights

softens when he breaks with his friends.

She said to me: I thought you [unclear word], because

I saw you stringing beautiful pearls.

You did not struggle over meanings,

nor was a labored meaning beautiful.

And you strike enemies down like a lion,

bold, if they seek a clash of spears.

You allay for them the sting of calamities,

and turn renewed war away from them.

And you pour out favors for them when they seek your bounty,

having taught them that you need not be pressed.

And you never kept company with a timorous coward—

may God curse the timorous coward!

I told her: You have misunderstood the matter; I,

if you did not know me, am [unclear word].

I drank choice virtues as an evening draught,

and in the heights of glory let the reins run free.

    I shunned disgrace and indolence,

    and avoided deceit and humiliation.

I never sought vengeance through treachery,

nor consent to the betrayal of my pledge.

I never made my tongue divulge a secret

to my enemies, even if they cut out my tongue.

Nor, if captured, did I become submissive,

and many a young man submits when captured.

I never entertained the proud delegations, whenever

they halted, except with heaped serving-bowls,

and cups which, whenever brought near

one besotted with wine-jars, made him deride the jars.

And I keep fools' lodgings far from them,

for fear of the ways of people unlike us.

And, once my hand has seized him, never does

my enemy ride any conveyance but a bier.

I never gave a tainted pledge of safety except

to one who gave me a tainted pledge of safety.

    وإِنَّ لِكُلِّ حَادِثَةٍ لَشَانَا

    I never violated a sanctuary with my own hand;

and every event indeed has its own import.

Our blood is never left unavenged,

and whoever holds us cheap is cheap to us.
