غَرَاماًwith passionate longing مِنfrom تَذَكَّرِهَاremembering them القلُوبُthe hearts
Stop with me, you two, at ruins where hearts melt
My heart melts for a ruin where love dwells
with passionate longing at their remembrance.
From the memory which makes hearts ache.
سَحِبتُI trailed مَطَارِفَbordered cloaks الغفلاتِmoments of heedlessness فيهاin them
زماناfor a time لاnot تنوبُstrike بهin it الخُطُوبُthe calamities
I trailed the bordered cloaks of heedlessness there,
For a time I drew aside the veils of neglect from it,
for a time when no calamities struck,
When misfortunes do not come round.
ولاَand no نَصَبٌhardship يَمَسُّيtouches القومَthe people فِيهِin it
ولاnor فَيهin it يَمَسُّهُمُtouches them لُغُوبٌweariness
and no hardship touched the people there,
Neither does any toil afflict the people in it,
nor did weariness touch them there.
Nor in it are they touched by wasting diseases.
شققتُI tore بهin it جلابيبَouter robes كُلَّevery خَودٍlovely maiden
وشُقِّقَتِand were torn apart البراقعُthe face-veils والجُيُوبُand the necklines
There I tore the outer robes of every lovely maiden,
I rent with it the garment of every smiling cheek,
and face-veils and necklines were rent.
And tents and cheek-veils were torn.
وكَمand many a غَنِيَتdwelt بساحِتهاin their courtyard فَتَاةٌa maiden

And many a maiden dwelt in their courtyard,
Many a beautiful, delicate, proud-necked damsel
slender-waisted, nobly born, and loving.
Has sung in its court.
وَبانَتand she departed عنfrom مَعَاهِدِهَاher familiar haunts واضحَتand they became
قِفَاراًbarren wastes والنَّوائِبُand misfortunes قَدmay تَنُوبstrike
And she left her familiar haunts, and they became
Revealed were their abodes plainly,
barren wastes—and misfortunes may strike.
And the wild cattle were roaming.
فياso, oh ليتَwould that العهودَthe old days كماas عهدناwe knew
وليتَand would that الدهرَtime ذَاهِبُهُwhat has passed of it يَئوبَreturn
So, would that the old days were as we knew them,
Oh would that the days were as we knew them,
and would that bygone time returned.
And would that departing fortune might turn back!
