1. رَقِيقُ اللَّونِ لأني

    لَقَّمتُهُ مَرُتَينِ

    Pale in hue, because I

    fed it mouthfuls twice;

  2. وَلَم تُفُد لَقَمَاتِى

    سِوَى اصفِرَارٍ وَشَينِ

    and my mouthfuls yielded nothing

    but yellowing and disfigurement.

  3. قَضَيتُ هَذِي بِهَذِي

    قَضَاءَ دَينٍ بِدَينِ

    I settled this with that,

    repaying one debt with another.
