O you who wear the most splendid robes
O you who wear the most splendid robes
Of glory, Akhābīb son of Ḥābīb;
Of pottery are your chambers, O son of tent dwellers

And O you who set upright the shafts of eminence, until
And O you who build the highest water pipes
The bends in those shafts became straight.
Until the crookedness of pipes is corrected

Grant us lofty resolve in words of wisdom,
Make for us the loftiest ambition with wisdom
With which we fold up the deserts in pitch-black nights.
With which we can roll up the miles in the black desert sands

For Kaolack—none could overcome its remoteness
A goal after which none could strive
By drawing it near, save the nimble, crimson-shanked one,
Except the obstinate, resolute, daring men

Or the ship that sails with such speed
The passage of rainless clouds and the onrushes of downpours.
The flight of arrows and splashing of paddles

And this land, for all its remoteness:
And this land despite its remoteness
The barefoot there fear being seized by their collars.
The barefoot fear to tread and take its sandals
