O ʿAyn al-Salāma, do not sleep,

for you have awakened the sleepers of humankind,

and enraged the spiteful envier with a rage

that made him drink humiliation and reproach.

And you were an affliction to the enemies’ eyes,

grievous in the heart’s sheath and in the bones.

May the downpour of morning clouds water her environs,

    forever blessed in their aftermath.

    Calamities pass through her, scowling,

and find the sheikh more steadfast than Mount Shamām,

and endowed with generosity and resolve.

The point of his reed pen is a sharp sword’s edge.

Nor does he yearn to quench his thirst in humiliation

when honor lies in burning thirst.

So the flood of time’s calamities is swept away from him

by resolves that never yield to repose.

He has aspirations that have gathered lofty honors for him,

as the palm gathers all the fingers.

    وُقِيتَ الشَّرَّ مِن مَلِكٍ هُمَامِ

    O ʿAbd Allāh, live as a valiant king;

may you be spared the evil of a mighty king.
