Nawar visited me by night in Dakar,

And stirred my anxieties and memories.

She joined me, though she had long denied me

Union with her—Nawar—in the watchman’s absence.

    فَهوُ في القَلبِ مثلُ جَذَوةِ نَارِ

    Her habit is to shun me, and mine is to love her;

That love in my heart is like an ember of fire.

    خَانني عَن هَوَى نَوارِ اصطِبَارِي

    I cannot endure being apart from Nawar;

My patience failed me in resisting love for Nawar.

Whenever my longing for Nawar grows,

She shows me still greater aversion.

She visited me while the night was dark as the color

Of pitch, after the late-night companions had fallen asleep.

She showed me pearls and gold,

    Amid exquisite pearls and gold.

And showed me a night upon a moon at its fullness,

Above a slender branch upon a crumbling dune.

And daughters of the dunes—henna-dyed fingers—

And a pure, radiant wrist filling its bracelet.

And a spaced-toothed mouth, descending like acacia,

And daisies, and a mantle of dignity,

Sweet to savor, as though its saliva, in

The wake of sleep, were the honey-gatherer’s jar.

How wondrous that Nawar found her way to me,

After I had crossed the far reaches of the wastes,

    And ventured into fearsome seas,

Aboard a vessel of ribs and nails.

As I once knew her, a dune would deter her,

Heaped high, from visiting the abode of visitation.

She left me and kept me sleepless; so my tears

Are now pouring down, now flowing,

Like al-Mustafa the caliph’s bounty in drought,

    When the night-traveling rains fail.

He was never the empty promise of lightning, but

A downpour of generosity without night-faring lightning.

Fear no taint in his bounty from

The bitterness of reminders of favors, or from troubles.

And when you come to him, you alight in safety

And security, and an abundant downpour,

And with a noble man of commanding presence and modesty,

    And generosity, chastity, and dignity,

And intelligence, nobility, and lofty virtues,

And fine qualities, ancestral stock, and lineage,

    And auspicious birds, and men

Humble and prostrate for the Creator’s sake.

    لَم يَفتَرُوا عن الأذكَارِ

    Always in their prostrations they remember God;

    They never slacken in remembrance.

They drank a cup from the wine of his meaning,

And became intoxicated by drinking that wine.

So at his door they worship God

In the late afternoons and early mornings.

The abode of the Most Holy is an abode of bliss,

And peace, delight, and abiding rest.

It neighbored the sun’s setting-place at its rising-place,

So it stands in the noblest neighborhood.

It joined new glory to inherited glory,

    And thus encompassed all glory.

And adorned itself with a splendid, generous-hearted man,

A reader of the Book and a host to the guest,

Learned in the sciences, free of dishonor,

Compassionate toward the weak and unclothed,

Bearing every neighbor’s burden, while the outpourings

Of his hands stream over the neighbors,

Supporting his neighbor when calamities grow fierce,

    Freely giving dirhams and dinars.

He has not made this abode his home,

And such is the discerning man, who knows.

He is only prepared for the final outcome of the

Abode, chanting: ‘How excellent is the abode’s final outcome!’

    قَدَّمتُهُ في الشَّأوِ والمِضمَارِ

    He suckled blessings from his master’s breast;

I advanced him in the race and on the course.

Do not fear that any rival will match your reach,

For small pools are not like seas.

You are but like al-Khadim in loftiness,

And in learning, and stars, and brilliant stars.

So your lofty merits stand in wondrous order,

And your favors are wondrously strewn.

And you followed the path of the radiant Sunnah,

Nor were you deceived by a path of delusion.

Draw me near, for I am laying down,

On coming to you, the staff of wandering.
