أمِor الحَسنَاءُthe beautiful woman ثَقَّبتِpierced الرِّوَاقَاthe curtain
Is it lightning whose gleam I have glimpsed,
A lightning flash whose glimmer I glimpsed
or has the fair one pierced the curtain?
As if the fair one had pierced the corridor
أرِقتُI stayed awake أشِيمُهُI watch its flashes ولقدand indeed شجَانيit grieved me
وحَمَّلنيand burdened me with غَرَاماًpassion لَنwill not يُطَاقَاbe endured
I stayed awake watching its flashes; it has indeed grieved me
I became lovesick for him, though he pained me
and burdened me with a passion beyond endurance.
And burdened me with a love that cannot be borne
وِإنand if يَكُنِit is البَتُولBatul فَإنَّthen indeed عِندِىI have

And if it is Batul, then I have
If he is a young man, then I
longing for her and for those who dwell beside her.
Long for him and for his neighbor
كَلِفتُI became enamored بَهَاof her وأوقَدَand kindled فيin فُؤَادِىmy heart
تَشَوُّقُهاlonging for her إضطِرَاماًa blaze واحتِرَاقاًand burning
I am enamored of her; within my heart is kindled
I was burdened by him, and he ignited
by longing for her a blaze and a burning.
My yearning for him into burning and inflammation
أبِيتُI spend the night إِذَاwhenever رَمقتُI glimpsed وَمِيضَthe flash of بَرقٍlightning
أُراقِبُهُI watch it استِجَاراًseeking refuge وارتِفَاقَاand seeking comfort
I spend the night, whenever I glimpse lightning's flash,
I stay up when I notice the flash of lightning
watching it, seeking shelter and solace.
To watch it pleading and trembling
واعتِرُضَand I intercept الرِّفَاقَthe traveling companions إِذَاwhen تَبَدَّتshe appears

And I intercept the traveling companions when she appears,
And I block the path if the companions appear
to ask the companions where she may be.
To ask about the place I suspect she frequents
سَقَيتُكِI gave you drink يَاO بَتُولُBatul لُبَابَthe essence of وِدِّىmy love
وأَصدَقَهand its truest part إصطِبَاحاًas a morning draught واغتِبَاقَاand as an evening draught
I gave you, O Batul, the essence of my love to drink,
I quenched your thirst, oh maiden, with the essence of my love
and its truest draught, morning and evening.
And its most sincere embrace and attachment
وقَدand indeed فَارَقتنيyou left me وأرَقتِand you poured out دَمعِىmy tears

And you have left me and poured out my tears—
Yet you left me, though my tears run down
do you not see my tears poured out?
Do you not see my streaming, flooding tears?
أَمَاwill you not? تَأوِينَtake pity لِىon me فَلَقَدfor indeed سَقَانيgave me drink
غَرَامُكِpassion for you كَأسَa cup of لَوعَتِهِits anguish دِهَاقَاbrimming
Will you not pity me? For I have been given to drink
Will you not shelter me? For your love
by love of you a cup brimming with its anguish.
Has made me drink a cup of bitter sorrow
فِرَاقُكِyour departure ماnot شَعَرتُI knew بِهِof it إِلَىuntil أنthat

I knew nothing of your departure until
I did not feel the pain of our separation until
the callers cried out: 'She has resolved to leave.'
The callers called for our final parting
فَجِئتُso I came مُوَدِّعاًbidding farewell فَصَددتِthen you turned away عنيfrom me
صُدُوداًa rejection شَقَّtore بيthrough me ألَماًwith pain وشَاقاand made me yearn
So I came to bid farewell, but you turned away from me,
So I came to bid farewell, but you turned away
a rejection that rent me with pain and made me yearn.
Turning harshly, paining me, so difficult
وقُلتِand you said أمَاhave you not? أفَقتَrecovered your senses فَقُلتُso I said كَلاَّno
أيَصدُقُcan he be sincere? ذُوone possessed of المَحَبَّةِlove إِنif أفَاقَاhe recovered his senses
And you said, 'Have you not come to your senses?' I said, 'No!'
And you said, do you not wake up? I said no,
Can one who loves be sincere if he comes to his senses?
Can one in love wake when parted?
ولُحتِand you appeared وفَحتِand wafted fragrance فيin شَمسٍsunlight ومِسكٍand musk
فَلاَقَىso met القَلبُthe heart أصعَبَthe hardest of ماwhat يُلاَقَىis encountered
And you shone and wafted fragrance, in sunlight and musk,
You shone like the sun and musk
so the heart met the hardest trial it could meet.
So my heart met the most difficult of trials
كَأنَّكِas though you were ظَبيَةٌa gazelle عَيناًin eye وجِيجاًand in breast
ولَستِbut you are not بِظَبيَةٍa gazelle كَفِلاًin rump وسَاقَاand in leg
You are like a gazelle in eye and breast,
As if you were a gazelle, with eyes and voice
but not a gazelle in rump and leg.
Yet no gazelle in flank and leg
فَقُلتُso I said لأَعذُرَI shall surely excuse الوَاشِينَthe tale-bearers لَمَّاwhen

So I said, 'I shall surely excuse the tale-bearers,' when
So I said I would pardon those who blamed you
the hurrying driver sang the she-camels onward, bearing you.
When the blamer provoked you with insult

And I could manage no farewell except a gesture
And I could not bid farewell save with a tearful glance
with a glance that I cast furtively.
I had stolen in longing
