Is it because she came by night after excuses and estrangement—

Umam—that tears once held back now spill and flow?

They overflow upon the breast in longing and anguish,

So the breast reddens from the outpourings of their crimson streams.

Indeed, she came late at night, with enchantment above wine,

And a full moon above a curved dune, and night above a full moon,

And musk, and wild rose, and laurel, and pearls,

And estrangement with embers upon the heart and breast.

You granted Umam pure love, but she turned away,

And rebuffed you, persisting in excuses and estrangement.

And she turned aside: whatever affection you unfolded,

She folded it away; the army of folding assails evil.

And she laughs in admiration of those among whom she belongs,

And disdains my verse, and disdains my prose.

And she gazes at us, then gazes at them,

And gazes at the dusty earth, and gazes at the Eagle.

And deems the Pleiades and the Ostriches beneath them,

And marvels at my closeness, and mocks my strength.

And she did not know that I was aware,

And that one who knows is not like one who did not know,

And that I belong to illustrious, noble men,

Unsullied, suns of the age among nomads and settled folk.

God has willed nothing but that we be time's radiant brow,

Masters of the assemblies, the pearl upon the breast,

Great ships amid time's calamities, the pupil of its eye,

The refuge of its sons when its grievous ordeal strikes,

Builders of eminence, bounty, glory, and generosity,

Shunning shameful deeds, abhorring obscenity and wickedness.
