Is a heart still—and will it forever remain—
My passion remains unending, undying
tormented by its remembrance of Batul?
For the memory of the chaste maiden.

When the reproacher chides it, its yearning grows,
If the coquettish one is aloof, my longing
and its lovesick frenzy; it does not heed the reproacher.
And infatuation only increase, unrestrained by aloofness.

If she is mentioned, it recalls a slender bān-tree shoot
When she is remembered, I recall a tattoo
upon a sandhill, and a fawn's mother apart from the herd;
On a slender arm and a refractory, fickle mother.

as long as the agitated lover's night;
Like the night of a lovesick, sleepless one.

Bathed gently by her ringlets.

Purer than any branch.

And she sways like a lance, slender like a stalk
that nestle in sandy flats and torrent beds,
Sheltered amidst thorns and torrents.

sweet to kiss, fresh as heady wine;
Sweet her kiss, green her youth
her kisser, for her sake, scorns wine.
Her kisser craves her sweet kiss.

and if I kissed it, it would soothe my burning thirst.
Were I to kiss her, she would cure all my pain.

I cannot find a way to reach her.

but she withholds her intimacy, save for a little.
Allowing only a little.

I remembered Batul, and I do not know:
I remembered the chaste one but know not
did they call her Batul, or Qatul—the slayer?
If she was called chaste or deadly.

And I drained the great waterskins of it until
I dried my cheeks completely
I feared the swelling seas would wither.
I feared my bones would waste away in sorrow.

I remembered you, Batul, despite the distance,
I remembered you, O chaste one, while cooing
while the doves in the grove called, cooing.
And in the yard, a dove called sadly.

Then the guide told me, 'You have reached Sul.'
The guide said to me, “You have come misguided,”
I said to him, 'Was I seeking Sul?'
But I said “Nay, misguided was my intent.”

By your life, I've not forgotten the pact between us
and you, when we met in the late afternoon.
When we used to meet intimately.

No whit has diminished of the passion
my love for you by a date-stone's dimple or thread.
That consumes me for your love.

And disturbs me when I rest.

I will take the remnants as my guide.

Would not tolerate a worthless man.

And soon she may find a noble man.

Without some shame or remorse for their beauty.

treacherous, from whose attacks no one is safe.

So he is driven away, corrupt and ignorant.

Dragging behind it disgrace and scorn.
