If my Lord concealed the sheikh from certain groups,
If my Lord concealed the sheikh from the groups
granting them respite to revile the delight of the eye,
He inspired them to curse the delight of my eyes

God has let me witness his special distinction, despite
So I bear witness to Him of the specifics that
my own faults, one piled upon another.
There was no disdain from me toward the uncouth

For what is in me did not prevent me from seeing what
Thus there is nothing in me that prevented me from seeing
the Giver of gifts to the perfected among humankind bestowed on him.
What the Giver has given as a gift, O You who perfects mankind
فظلمةso the darkness of النفسthe soul أبدتrevealed لىto me محاسنَهhis beauties
كظلمةlike the darkness of الليلnight تبدىreveals بهجةthe splendor of القمرthe moon
The soul's darkness thus revealed his beauties to me,
The darkness of the self has shown me his virtues
as night's darkness reveals the moon's splendor.
Like the darkness of night reveals the radiance of the moon

Groups listened to them; their gatherings contained no
I listened to the groups and their immoralities in their gatherings
one to denounce and rebuke the sheikh's humiliation.
Slandering the sheikh, scolded and reprimanded

امهالهمtheir reprieve عنabout تَولِّىthe passing of المالwealth والعمرِand life
What emboldened them against our guide and deceived them
Tempted by our teachers and tempted by them
about the passing of wealth and life was their reprieve.
Procrastinating from taking responsibility and age
أماdid ... not درواthey know أنهthat He والظلمand wrongdoing يمهلهHe grants it respite

وأخذهand His seizure يومthe day يأتىit comes أخذthe seizure of مقتدرone all-powerful
Did they not know that He grants wrongdoing respite,
Do they not know that He and injustice delays it
and His seizure, when it comes, is that of One all-powerful?
And seizing it one day comes, seizure of the Capable
أماdid ... not درواthey know أنَّthat للاشياخfor the sheikhs منتصراa defender

ماnot غابwas absent أمor حسبوهthey thought Him غيرnot منتصرِa defender
Did they not know that the sheikhs have a defender
Do they not know that for the sheikhs there is a victor
who is never absent—or did they think He would not defend them?
Neither absent nor did they think Him other than victor

They suppose their abuse of the sheikh harms him;
They vilify him to the sheikh, his injuries
not so: their abuse of the sheikh has done no harm.
No! Their vilification of the sheikh did not harm

A wasp alighting on a date cluster is of little account,
On coarseness has fallen a hyena and pounced
for the cluster does not complain of wasps alighting.
Since not the coarseness complains of the pounce of hyena

Tell me: is it the solid rock's summit that is harmed,
Have I shown you above the highest of deafness
or the white-footed ibex's horn when ibexes butt against stone?
Or the horn of blindness, the blindness butted the stone
فليهجناthen let him lampoon us فلناthen we have إنif يهجناhe lampoons us بهمُalong with them
حسنthe merit of التأسىemulation وحسنُand the merit of القفوfollowing للأثرin the footsteps
Then let him lampoon us: if he lampoons us along with them, ours is
So let them defame, for us there is
the merit of emulation and the merit of following their footsteps.
Good emulation and good following of trace
وماand no لناfor us بعدafter ماthat سُبتwere reviled مشائخناour sheikhs
فيin أنthat نصانwe be protected عنfrom العوراءvile speech منany وطرdesire
And after our sheikhs have been reviled, we have
And we have nothing after our sheikhs were insulted
no desire to be spared vile words.
Than to be shielded from the vulnerable of wounds
فالسبso abuse نشربهwe drink it مذسبهمsince they were reviled عسلاas honey
وشاربand the drinker of المدحpraise مناamong us شاربa drinker of الصِّبَرbitter aloe
So since they were reviled, we drink abuse as honey,
So we drink the insults as honey
and whoever among us drinks praise drinks bitter aloe.
And the praiser amongst us drinks patience
ماذاwhat عسيناmight we hope إذاwhen سبتare reviled مشائخناour sheikhs
أنto نكتسىwe clothe ourselves منin حُلَىthe adornments of الأمداحpraises والحبرand patterned robes
How could we hope, when our sheikhs are reviled,
What can we expect if our sheikhs are insulted
to clothe ourselves in the adornments of praise and patterned robes?
Except to be adorned with sweet words and ink
فمدحهمso praise of them إنif أتَاناreaches us فهوthen it is مدحتناpraise of us
وسبهمand abuse of them إنif أتَانَاreaches us آخرَthe end of الخبرِthe story
So praise of them, if it reaches us, is praise of us;
So their praise if it comes to us it is our praise
and abuse of them, if it reaches us, is ours too—end of the story.
And their insult if it comes to us the final news
