لَعمرِيby my life لَقَدindeed كَانَتwas نَفِيسةُNafisa قُرَّةًa delight
لِعَينيto my eye وأُنسِيand my solace أَحمدَAhmad الدينal-Din (the faith) مِنof جِنسِيmy own kind
By my life, Nafisa was indeed a delight
to my eye, and Ahmad al-Din, of my own kind, was my solace.
خَفِيفٌlight عَلَىupon قَلبِيmy heart هَواهُlove for him لَذِيذَةٌsweet
أحَادِيثُهُhis conversations مَاnot هُوhe إِلاَّexcept مُنَىdesires النَّفسِthe soul
Love for him rests lightly on my heart; sweet are
his conversations—he is all the soul desires.
وقُرَّةُand the delight عَينيmy eye كَانَwas بِالأمسِyesterday نَأيُهاher departure
وأُنسِىand my solace تَنَاءَwent far away اليَومَtoday فاليومُso today كَالأمسِlike yesterday
And the delight of my eye went far away yesterday,
and my solace went far away today; so today is like yesterday.
فَكَيفَhow, then مُقُامِىmy remaining أوor قَرَارِىmy repose بِحِيلَةٍby any means
وقُرَّةُand the delight عَينيmy eye قَدalready نَأَتshe has gone far away وَنأَىand has gone far away أُنسِىmy solace
How, then, can I remain or find rest by any means,
when the delight of my eye has gone far away, and my solace has gone too?
