كُتُبُbooks الآدَابِliterature هِمتُI fell in love بِهَاwith them
ويَهِيمُand falls in love المَرءُa person فيin كَبرهhis old age
Books of literature—I have fallen in love with them.
The books of literature I was keen on
And a man falls in love in his old age.
And man becomes distracted in his old age
فإِذاso when فَارقتُهاI part with them هَملَتstreamed
مُقلَتِىmy eye بالدَّمعِwith tears مُنتَثِرَهscattered
So when I part with them, it streams—
So when I parted from them I neglected
My eye—with tears spilling forth.
My tears flowing from my weeping eyes
وخليلٌand a dear friend قَدmay أُفَارِقُهI part with him
ثُمَّthen لاَnot أبكِىI weep عَلَىover أثرَِهhis trace
And a dear friend I may part with,
And a friend whom I am leaving
Then I do not weep after his departure.
Then I do not cry over his traces
