يُمَلِّؤني وَعظاً هُزَالُ بِلاَلِ

يُمَلِّؤني وَعظاً هُزَالُ بِلاَلِ

واطعامُه للَّحمِ غيرَ حَلالِ

واطعامُه للَّحمِ غيرَ حَلالِ

Bilal’s gauntness fills me with admonition.

The scrawny Bilal fills me with his preaching,

And his serving of meat is unlawful.

Though to eat meat he calls unlawful.

وما قَالَه اللَّوَّ الذي كَبشهُ

وما قَالَه اللَّوَّ الذي كَبشهُ

لقد ضَلَّ ذاكَ الكبشُ أيَّ ضَلالِ

لقد ضَلَّ ذاكَ الكبشُ أيَّ ضَلالِ

And what al-Laww said, whose ram—

What the Shepherd said of the ram he slaughtered—

That ram has indeed gone utterly astray!

Indeed that ram went mightily astray!

وليس له إلا شهادةٌ صِبيَةٍ

وليس له إلا شهادةٌ صِبيَةٍ

صِغَارٍ بَنَاتٍ مَا لَهُنَّ ولا لِي

صِغَارٍ بَنَاتٍ مَا لَهُنَّ ولا لِي

And he has only the testimony of children,

He can offer only a child's testimony,

Little girls—with nothing for them or for me.

Little girls, nothing to do with me!
